Amir Khan is unlikely to face Kell Brook this summer as he looks to negotiate a fight with Miguel Cotto in America.
Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn said last week he had talks with Khan’s team over a proposed fight on June 13 and urged the Bolton boxer to make the bout happen.
But Khan, 28, is instead looking at facing Cotto, Juan Manuel Marquez, Timothy Bradley or Chris Algieri on May 30 or June 6.
Former world light-welterweight champion Khan is currently discussing his options with adviser Al Haymon and flies out to California later this week to start training for his next fight.
Khan, who impressively out-pointed Devon Alexander in Las Vegas in December, is looking for an opponent well-known to an American audience after he was left disappointed at not being able to fight either Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao.
The pair face each other on May 2 in the biggest fight for decades but British fight fans will have to wait a little longer for the clash of its top two welterweights, Khan and Brook.
Brook, 28, makes a first defence of his IBF world title against Canada-based Jo Jo Dan in his home city of Sheffield on March 28.
A source close to the Khan camp told ESPN that the turnaround between Brook’s last fight and possibly facing Khan early in June, along with Khan observing the religious holy month of Ramadan from mid-June, meant “the fight was just not viable”.
Brook’s profile to American broadcaster Showtime was also a concern for Khan’s camp.
A fight between Brook and Khan could happen later this year, but promoters may decide to wait until summer 2016 to hold it at an outdoor stadium which could attract a larger live gate than an indoor arena in November or December.
Puerto Rican Cotto, 34, is the WBC world middleweight champion who beat Argentine Sergio Martinez in his last fight in June last year, while Mexican Marquez, 41, has been out of action since May.
American Bradley, 31, was held to a draw with Diego Gabriel Chaves after losing a rematch to Pacquiao earlier in the year.
Algieri was beaten by Pacquiao on points in November, suffering his first defeat in a 21-fight career.
