Five years ago, negotiations between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao broke down in part because the latter wouldn’t agree to random drug testing.
Not only has that stipulation already reportedly been agreed to during current talks, but it appears Pacquiao has upped the ante.
“I’ve no problem with drug testing. In fact, in the contract, I was the one who suggested the $5-million fine if one is tested positive for drugs. I was the one who inserted that because that’s needed,” Pacquiao told reporters at the House of Representatives in the Philippines.
According to all parties, negotiations for Mayweather-Pacquiao on May 2 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas — which would be the richest fight in boxing history — still are ongoing.
Some of the finer points have been agreed upon, but no formal contract has been signed, a report Mayweather refuted while at the NBA All-Star game and Pacquiao also has confirmed.
“The negotiations are almost done. Let’s wait for them to announce the fight. We’ve agreed with the terms and conditions,” Pacquiao said.
If and when the fight is official, both parties have agreed Mayweather would be the one to announce it, likely via social media.
