The clock is ticking on Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao negotiations, with Mayweather’s targeted May 2 fight date less than three months way.
Currently, though, both sides can’t even seem to agree on who is holding things up, and Mayweather took to social media again today to explain his side.
“I set up this meeting with Manny Pacquiao to get this fight done but they will continue to tell the public it’s us and that’s NOT TRUE,” Mayweather posted on his Shots account. Mayweather and Pacquiao met face to face at a Miami Heat game last week, and then later that night in a hotel suite. The photo shared by Mayweather appears to be from a restaurant in Miami. By all accounts, those meetings were positive.
But, Top Rank’s Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter, told ESPN.com this week there doesn’t seem to be “any urgency on their side. It’s terrible.”
“The thing that really concerns me is that we are running out of time for May 2,” Arum told ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael. “If you want to drag this out a little longer then move the fight to later in May — May 30 is a good date — or go in June. We agreed to go on May 2 because that is the date Mayweather is hung up on, but if we’re going to go on May 2 we need to get this done.”
Mayweather prefers to fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend in Las Vegas, and this would be his fifth bout in a six-fight deal with Showtime. Pacquiao is planning to fight May 30 if a fight with Mayweather can’t be finalized.
