WBA President Gilberto Mendoza and WBA Executive Vice President Gilberto Jes?s Mendoza are in Spain and visited the famed sports media c?mpany MARCA. While there they spoke about some current issues in the boxing world.
?The public needs the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight,? said Mendoza. ?Mayweather?s running out of opponents and it seems he only has two more fights in his career. The purse is soaring and any other opponent has no meaning for Mayweather. I think that on May 2, Mayweather and Pacquiao will face off. Maybe they?ll announce it next week.?
Note: Pacquiao has never fought for a WBA world title.
The Mendozas also touched on about the direction in boxing politics. ?The cooperative relationship that exists between the WBA, WBC and IBF is unique. We are trying to create tournaments to compete the champions of our organizations so that there is only one champion as we wish. The collaboration is still very important in search of a clear future for professional boxing.?
The Mendozas indicated that the WBA is in opposition to the AIBA trying to control professional boxing. ?The AIBA is hard, manages to national federations, receives money from them and their governments, and also organizes the Olympic Games, which is essential for an athlete. But it is unfair competition. Each has its place. It?s as if teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid participated in the Olympic Games against teams of amateurs.?
