Op-Ed: Boxing promoters, advisers stand in the way to most wanted fights

Despite popular public clamor for top caliber, equally-matched and entertaining bouts, fight fans usually end up getting mismatches and robbed of their sports budgets as promoters, advisers, including fighters take their interest first over public clamor

A case in point is the long-delayed fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, a publicly demanded fight that has been withheld by the promoters and advisers from public view. There has been a number of obstacles that were placed by both camps along the pathway to the world’s most wanted fight. Among other things, Mayweather blamed Pacquiao for refusing his offer of $40 million and for not not submitting himself to random blood and urine test. But Pacquiao said he has complied with everything that Mayweather had demanded and there shouldn’t be any reason for him to agree to his challenge. They could continue trashing each other for as long as they get promotional points in hyping their individual matches but the sad fact is they are pulling the industry down with their senseless demands. Another highly-demanded match that is likely to fail is the fight between Mexican star Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico. Golden Boy Promotions owner Oscar de la Hoya is getting restless as he wanted the Alvarez-Cotto fight to take place on the occasion of Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican holiday which is barely four months from now. A four-month window is barely enough to get all the preparations done including eight weeks of training and the required time to promote the fight.
