WBC super featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera is waiting on the sidelines while his promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, is figuring out who will challenge him on March 11, 2007, in the main event on an HBO pay-per-view broadcast.
Overseas publication Tempo, noted that Barrera is hoping that Manny Pacquiao can sort out his promotional situation in time to make a rematch for March. Currently, both Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank, have signed contracts with Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao signed a seven-fight deal with Golden Boy in September, and then signed a four-year deal with Top Rank in November. Both promotional firms have filed lawsuits to settle the issue on which company has the right to promote the Filipino bomber.
“(I) hope that Pacquiao solves his problem so the fight can be done on March 11,” Barrera said. “In the next few days, I will be meeting with my promoter (Golden Boy Promotions) to know who my challenger is going to be.”
While Barrera hopes to fight Pacquiao, if the lawsuit between Golden Boy and Top Rank is not settled, Barrera will face the next best option, likely to be fellow Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez, who is also promoted by Golden Boy.
“I hope that if it is not Pacquiao, they can still tell me who is it going to be,” Barrera said. “I really wish to fight the Filipino, but if it becomes difficult, what can we do?”
