Superman vs. Reality

Stevenson is an exciting fighter who is fun to watch, but it will be more fun watching the two men he has avoided?

In anticipation of his Dec. 19 Showtime fight at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, Canada, against Dmitry ?The Hunter? Sukhotsky (22-2, 16 KOs), WBC light heavyweight Adonis ?Superman? Stevenson (24-1, 20 KOs) met with the press to sing his own praises.

?My hand has healed from the injury when I fought Fonfara,? he said. ?I?m healthy and I?m ready to go. Going 12 rounds was a good experience for me. I train for 12 rounds in the gym. Sometimes it?s good to go the distance and get the experience.?

The hard-hitting light heavyweight champion from Laval, Quebec, Canada, by way of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, is a force to be reckoned with. He may have looked less than fabulous in his last fight against Andrzej Fonfara, the tough but unskilled Pole who fights out of Chicago, but an injury is an injury and his previous fight to go the distance (10 rounds) was in 2007 against 9-4-1 David Whittom.

?Everybody brings their A-game because I?m the champ,? continued Stevenson.? I know I?m the king of the light heavyweight division and I know that everyone wants to take my belt. I?m going to train very hard. Sukhotsky is a tough guy and he?s hoping to surprise me. I?ll prepare, my hands will be perfect and it will be a short night.?

Most of Stevenson?s fights have been short nights. With the exception of rugged Don George, who succumbed to a 12th round TKO when they fought in 2012, and Darnell Boone, who stopped Superman six years ago, a loss that was avenged in 2013, the majority of Superman?s opponents went down early and stayed down.

But Stevenson is not, despite his declaration, ?king of the light heavyweight division.? The real king of the light heavyweight division will be crowned this weekend in Atlantic City. Stevenson is an exciting fighter who is fun to watch, but it will be more fun watching the two men he has avoided, only to fight somebody no one has ever heard of.
