To stay in top shape, WBO light welterweight titlist Chris Algieri prepares and cooks his own food to be sure that he gets the kind of nutrition that he needs in order to stay in top shape as an athlete.
Algieri is set to face boxing’s only eight-weight division world titlist Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 22 at the Cotai Arena of the Venetian Resort & Casino in Macau, China. The unbeaten American fighter from New York is coming off a split decision victory over Ruslan Provodnikov to claim the WBO light welterweight title last June 14 in Broklyn, New York. Algieri, who has a bachelor?s degree in healthcare science from Stony Brook University and a master?s from the New York Institute of Technology, eats a lot of food but knows how to balance his diet, being a nutritionist by academic training. ?I average between eight to nine hours of sleep a night/day between naps. I generally eat between five to seven times a day, around 3,500 calories during training camp. I eat lots of fresh fruits and colorful veggies to help with recovery,” said Algieri in his ESPN Blog. ?I also eat a lot of complex grains and no processed foods. I prepare and cook about 90 percent of my own food and meals. Pacquiao has acknowledged Algieri’s credential as a fitness buff but is confident that he will beat Algieri in their upcoming fight. Pacquiao is also aware of Algieri’s superior height and reach which he will try to neutralize when they clash in the ring. “Chris Algieri poses many puzzles for me to solve. In terms of his height and reach, only Antonio Margarito surpasses him in the scope of opponents I have faced. Pacquiao said. “Algieri is also the most scientific, fluid and fittest fighter I have ever opposed. All of those factors, plus he is five years younger than me, make him the most dangerous opponent of my career,” he added. Considered by fans as the underdog in his upcoming clash with Pacquiao, Algieri could still pull an upset over Pacquiao because of his good conditioning and superior size,. Algieri, who is training in Las Vegas, Nevada, said he is confident of winning over the highly favored eight-divistion world titlist.
