Power Broker: Golovkin Wastes Rubio

Gennady Golovkin, the KO King from Karaga, Kazakhstan, wasted no time wasting Marco Antonio Rubio, stopping the veteran at 1:19 of round two?

Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 27 KOs), the KO King from Karaga, Kazakhstan, wasted no time wasting Marco Antonio Rubio (59-7-1, 52 KOs), from Torreon, Coahuila de Zaragoza, Mexico, stopping the veteran at 1:19 of round two.

Fighting out of the red corner in blue trunks, Triple G scored his 18th knockout in a row against an opponent who was three inches taller, eight pounds heavier, and considerably more experienced.

But whatever experience Rubio, fighting out of blue corner in black trunks, had coming in, it was inadequate for competing with, or even looking passable against Golovkin.

Both fighters were tentative in round one, but at least Rubio looked like he had come to fight. Unfortunately for Rubio, Golovkin had the same idea and landed 30 of 71 punches to Rubio?s 15 of 59 in the first round. More telling was that Triple G connected with 16 power punches to Rubio?s 10.

The writing was already on the wall.

What the first round lacked in action was more than made up for in round two. Triple G was landing his patented power shots when a right uppercut caught Rubio. He was hurt and retreated to the ropes. There?s no duck Golovkin loves more than a sitting duck. Rubio more than fit the bill. A left hook caught the Mexican on the top of the head and he went down as if shot. Jack Reiss administered the count, but Rubio failed to make it his feet before the ref reached ten.

Rubio?s response to the loss was a smile and shrug, which suggests that the thought of beating Golovkin may have been the furthest thing from his mind. But the final stats suggest that a smile and shrug were appropriate in light of the one-sided beating.

Golovkin landed 45 of 99 total punches (45%) to Rubio?s 21 of 76 (28%). In the power punch department, Triple G landed 28 of 54 (52%) to Rubio?s 13 of 40 (33%).

Rubio had no business being in the ring.

After the fight, Golovkin was his usual cheerful self.

?I love this fight,? he said in broken English. ?I take my fans. Thank you very much. Buenos noches, amigos. Como estas? Bien? Muchas gracias. Muchas gracias. Mexican style. Muchas gracias. Champion. Campeon. Thank you very much. Of course I like fight. I don?t like dancing. I like fight. This is true fight. Rubio he?s not step back. He?s fighter. He?s good fighter. Look at me. I have three belts. I say here, I want fight everybody. I think next year, next fight, I will fight with great champions. I think first Miguel Cotto. I respect him. Great champions, Miguel Cotto.?

When Triple G was asked about a possible fight with Canelo Alvarez, he said, ?Of course, of course. I respect him. He?s good boy. And Chavez Jr. too I want fight. And I thinks so first Miguel. I respect him.?

And some of that respect needs to go to Gennady Golovkin.

He?s Good Boy too.
