IF THERE is something that Nonito Donaire Jr. should watch out for against Nicholas Walters, it?s his power.
Nonito Donaire Sr., the father and trainer of Nonito Jr., said he is wary of Walter?s best asset.
However, he feels that his son can match up with Walter?s power and still has the slight edge because of his speed.
?You have to watch out for his power. But Jun-Jun (Nonito Jr.) is fast and also has power. This is going to be a great fight,? Nonito Sr. told Sun.Star Cebu.
Nonito Jr., the World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight super champion, faces regular WBA featherweight titleholder Walters on Oct. 18 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
The 28-year-old Walters is known for his heavy hands. He has an 83 percent knockout rate and is 24-0 with 20 knockouts. He has stopped his last four opponents.
In his last fight in March, the unbeaten Jamaican knocked out Vic Darchinyan in five rounds.
Nonito Jr. is also a big puncher but with amazing footwork and speed, which is one of the best in the business. He has a 31-2 record with 21 knockouts.
The 31-year-old Filipino-American also won in his last outing, on the same event Walters beat Darchinyan. Nonito Jr. walked away with a fifth round technical decision win over Simpiwe Vetyeka.
Nonito Jr. has already started training for Walters three weeks now at the Donaire Sr. Boxing and Fitness Gym in Oakland, California. He has logged five sparring sessions including eight rounds of sparring last Friday. According to Nonito Sr., Nonito Jr. has been sparring with featherweights Guy Robb of Sacramento and a boxer named Jesus from Redwood City.
Robb is a 25-year-old American boxer with a record of 14-1 with six knockouts.
