SPORTS FACTS AND FIGURES 64: DONNIE NIETES PREPARES FOR RING COMEBACK

PhilBoxing.com

Former four-weight world champion Donnie "Ahas" Nietes is contemplating a comeback fight at age 41. He told SunStar Cebu that he is just training and sweating it out, and if young fighters are willing to fight him, then he will be forced to make a comeback.

Nietes' last fight was on July 13, 2022 when he lost to WBO super flyweight champion Kazuto Ioka by unanimous decision at Ota City General Gymnasium, Tokyo, Japan.

* * *

He was inactive for two years now but he is confident that he can still fight with the same moves and still has a lot of energy left in him.

Nietes is currently training in Japan under the tutelage of Japan-based Filipino trainer Rey Orais at his Burning Heart Gym.

Nietes said Treasure Boxing Promotion probably will give him a tune-up first but other Japanese promoters might show interest. He added that Orais introduced him to several promoters in Japan. His fight most likely will happen in the month of June or July.

* * *

Nietes already has a hall of fame-worthy career, wherein he won four titles in four different weight classes. He also holds the record of being the longest reigning Filipino world champion.

* * *

Nietes will be turning 42 on May 12 and is the longest-reigning Filipino boxing world champion, surpassing in 2014 the record set in 1967 by Boxing Hall of Famer Gabriel "Flash" Elorde. He became one of the first three Asian fighters with four division world titles together with Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire.

* * *

He held the WBO mini-flyweight title, the WBO junior-flyweight titles, the IBF flyweight title and the WBO junior-bantamweight title. He has a career record of 43-2-6 with 23 knockouts.

Stephen Curry reached 300 3-pointers for an NBA-record fifth season and scored 14 points with four 3-pointers, one of seven players in double figures as the Warriors beat the Memphis Grizzlies 137-116 on Wednesday. This record has only been reached 7 times in NBA history and 5 of them are made by Curry.

NBA Record: Most points without a personal foul in a game - 73 by Wilt Chamberlain, San Francisco Warriors vs the New York Knicks on November 16, 1962.

Most points in a game without a 3-point field goal attempted or free throw attempted - 48 by Hakeem Olajuwon, Houston Rockets vs. Denver Nuggets on January 30, 1997.

Sports History: March 22, 1969. Lew Alcindor scores 37 points and grabbed 20 rebounds to lead UCLA to the NCAA men’s basketball title with a 97-72 win over Purdue. Alcindor is chosen as MVP for the third straight year.
