Newly-minted boxing star Jimrex Jaca of the Wakee Salud Stable has been chosen by the Games and Amusements Board as its Boxer of the Month for January following his impressive US debut underneath the Manny Pacquiao-Erik Morales rematch.
The GAB, which released its latest rankings yesterday, took special notice of Jaca's stirring first-round demolition of Mexican Geronimo Hernandez in the second bout of the fight card at the Thomas and Mack Center last January 21 which topbilled two icons from the Philippines and Mexico.
The victory over Hernandez earned for the Sibulan, Negros Oriental-raised Jaca instant celebrity status in glitzy Las Vegas, where casual fans and the high-rollers took turns in seeking out his autograph and a chance to pose with him for posterity.
Earlier, Sibulan Mayor Antonio Renacia awarded Jaca P10,000 plus a plaque of appreciation, while Oriental Negros Governor Jorge Arnaiz was also set to reward him with a P50,000 financial incentive for bringing honor to the province.
Meanwhile, GAB Chairman Buhain and Commissioners Angel Bautista and Alex Paglumotan are now in the thick of preparations for the 1st Annual GAB Convention on April 18 to 21.
World boxing leaders are expected to grace the event, while no less than President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is expected to welcome the foreign delegations.
