SILVANO LOSES BY LOPSIDED DECISION IN IBF MINIMUM WEIGHT TITLE FIGHT By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 03 Dec 2013 Filipino southpaw Vergilio Silvano lost by a lopsided twelve round decision to IBF minimum weight champion Katsunari Takayama of Japan in a title showdown at the Bodymaker Colosseum in Osaka late Tuesday. Although Takayama, who was formerly handled by ALA Promotions, staggered Silvano with a left hook in the opening round, he couldn?t finish off the game Filipino challenger who won just two rounds on the scorecards of judges Valerie Dorsett and Joseph Pasquale and lost by a 120-108 shutout on the scorecard of the third judge Joe Garcia. Takayama was fighting at home for the first time after some four years when he campaigned abroad because the Japan Boxing Commission didn?t recognize both the IBF and the WBO which has since been corrected. Takayama won the title by a twelve round unanimous decision over Mexico?s Mario Rodriguez in Mexico last March. The Japan Times reported that ?with quicker footwork, Takayama remained the aggressor from the opening round? and later ?punished the No. 6 IBF contender in a corner with a flurry of punches.? Silvano fought back in round nine with two judges scoring the round for the challenger 10-9. In a post fight interview Takayama said ?I felt relieved. I thought I might be able to knock him out but Silvano held on.? For his part the Silvano told the Japan Times ?Takayama was fast and experienced. I have sustained limited damage but he was a clever fighter with powerful right straights.? With the victory the 30 year old Takayama improved to 26-6 with 10 knockouts while the 23 year old Silvano dropped to 17-3-1 also with 10 knockouts.
