Ana Julaton and Allan Tremblay share a unique bond in the midst boxing?s cutthroat landscape

PhilBoxing.com

Ana Julaton?s extended layoff from the ring can be traced to a variety of factors. Promoters are reluctant to pit their boxers against a proven former champ like Julaton, viewing as her as a big risk to their wards. Another factor is the lack of exposure for female boxing in the US and from major television networks in a male dominated sports setting.

But one of the biggest reasons on why Julaton, 33, has not stepped in the ring in more than a year is of a personal matter. It is one that involves her long-time promoter, advisor and father figure, Allan Tremblay.

?I am ready to fight at any time, but the bigger fight is for my promoter, Allan Tremblay, who underwent numerous chemotherapy treatments this year. As you know, he has been battling cancer since 2011,? Julaton told Philboxing.com.

Tremblay, 72, has been in a life and death battle with prostate cancer for more than two years now. He has been making regular travels to Florida to undergo treatment for the disease from his home in Toronto, Canada. And because of that, he has to take a backseat from running his promotional company - Orion Sports, of which Julaton is one of his stars.

Tremblay told Philboxing.com in an exclusive interview that he had a conversation with Julaton in the past and offered to place her with another promoter so as to not be a hindrance to her boxing career but the Filipina-American ?would have none of it.?

?It?s a loyalty not seen in our business,? Tremblay added.

After more than a year, Julaton will make her return to the ring tonight in Cancun, Mexico against Celina Salazar of San Antonio, Texas. The bout will be a televised co-feature bout of a super featherweight championship match between Takashi Miura and hometown favorite, Sergio Thompson.

And her promoter believes that this will be the start of great things for Julaton who is not only aiming to win another title belt but also to be the face of women?s boxing. Tremblay said that the time is ripe for Women?s boxing to come to its own and complement their male counterparts in major boxing shows.

?Yes, I believe the time is nearing for that to happen. The first major network that jumps into Women's boxing will reap the rewards. If you have the right talent and personalities involved, it is a sure winner and Ana falls into both those categories.?

According to numerous reports, plans are being hatched by major TV networks such as Showtime and Fox, promoters like Golden Boy Promotions and even Floyd Mayweather Jr.?s Mayweather Promotions for Julaton to have major exposure in their events. That starts tonight in Cancun through Televisa in Mexico and Fox in the US and eventually a world title shot on the Mayweather Jr.-Saul Alvarez Showtime pay-per-view card in Las Vegas. Tremblay like Julaton downplayed such rumors, opting to take it one fight at a time, with tonight?s fight against Salazar taking foremost priority.

?We can fight for a title at any time. The key is to provide the right stage for that to happen to maximize her earnings,? Trembley said.

?There are plenty of rumors in that regard to be sure but, basically, we are all focused on August 17 right now and the rest will take care of itself,? added Tremblay whose respite from cancer provided him the opportunity to work on Julaton?s career again.

?This has been almost a 3 year battle for me which has limited my promotional access to the sport that I love and the fighters that rely on me. However, I feel the worst might be over and I am fully determined to prevail. You should know that the "boxing community" has been exceptionally supportive of me along the way and I will always remember that. Your best friends show up in the tough times.?

Tremblay has nothing but high praises and expectations for Julaton who stood by him during those tough times. He admitted that their relationship is ?way beyond Promoter-Fighter.?

?I have 3 daughters of my own and Ana is my 'fourth'. We are exceptionally close and I only aspire to what is best for her. We have come a long way together and the best is yet to come.?

Ana Julaton feels the same way. Allan Tremblay to her is a father instead of a promoter, a source of inspiration and wisdom more than a business advisor and he will be her inspiration tonight when she steps in that ring in Mexico.

?He is like a father to me and he is one of the best people to ever be involved in the sport,? she said.

Tremblay and Julaton are examples that loyalty, sincere friendships and trust still exist in the dog-eat-dog business of boxing.
