Mexico target maximum points against Algeria

PhilBoxing.com

Lausanne, Switzerland, 06 December 2012 - With the opportunity of moving top of Group A with a win, Mexico Guerreros will have several of their best performers gracing the canvas for the visit of Algeria Desert Hawks this Sunday 9 December (18:00 local time). Spearheading the team at fortress Foro Polanco will be two of last season's most exciting prospects, with the home team lining-up Elias Emigdio and Juan Romero against a quintet of boxers yet to taste World Series of Boxing (WSB) action.

2012 Individual Championships finalist Emigdio boasts one of the most impressive records in the competition and with this being his third season in WSB, Mexico expect their leading Bantamweight (50-54kg) to overcome the challenge posed by the dangerous unbeaten French pro boxer Vincent Legrand.

Romero, who won the WSB Individual Lightweight (57-61kg) belt in June this year, will afterwards need to be on his toes throughout the five rounds in order to counter the threat posed by the skilful London Olympian Ahmed Mejri from Tunisia. The 22-year-old Mexican came of age last season and will want to continue that fine form against an opponent who will be fighting for the very first time in pro style.

A confident Romero said, "I really love boxing in WSB, I was crowned the best Lightweight last season and I want to retain that title. I am in even better shape this season and just want to get out there and fight". On the opposition, he declared, "Algeria might be a new team but I have learned that in WSB there is no easy opponent. I will put my heart and soul into this match to give the Guerreros the win".

Mejri was quietly confident, "He is the champion but he will be surprised by me. I am here to show that I have all the attributes to succeed at the highest level. I was delighted to join the Algerian team and I want to repay their faith in me by beating my opponent".

The Middleweight (68-73kg) showdown will then see the tough Mexican southpaw Marvin Cabrera pitted against emerging Algerian talent Ilyas Abbadi. 19-year-old Cabrera's raw power saw him shine in his last outing against Poland and he will be looking to maintain that form with another win against this next rival.

Two WSB debutants will go head-to-head in the battle of the Light Heavyweight (80-85kg) southpaws as Mexico's Miguel Angel Gomez Meneses faces another French pro boxer, Matthieu Bauderlique. This will be a tough one to call with home boxer Gomez Meneses in for a long night against the powerful undefeated Frenchman.

It will be a real clash of Heavyweights (91+kg) when the Guerreros' giant Puerto Rican Gerardo Miguel Bisbal Melero meets 23-year-old Aboulaye Diane from Mali in the last contest of the night. Bisbal takes no prisoners and looked hard as nails in his previous bout when he outclassed his Argentine opponent. Diane is a proven fighter so it will be an intriguing one.

Notoriously strong at home, Mexico has begun its season with real panache and will look to maintain its winning sequence once again when the opposition come to town. You would not bet against them in this one.
