GOLDEN BOY CLAIMS ARUM IS BLUFFING
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 23 Oct 2006
Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions claims arch rival Bob Arum of Top Rank is bluffing when he boasts that Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao will continue to fight for him after his Grand Finale rubber match against legendary Mexican Erik “El Terrible” Morales at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas on November 18.
In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Golden Boy Promotions vice president and international matchmaker Eric Gomez said Arum is “bluffing. He’s got nothing, nothing. We are positive.”
Gomez said “everything is good” with Pacquiao and there was nothing to worry about. Nothing at all.”
In an interview with boxing writer Greg Leon last week Arum said that “at the end of the day I am convinced, won or lose, Manny Pacquiao’s next fight and fights after that will be under the banner of Top Rank.” The wily promoter refused to provide any additional details saying “that’s all I can say. I can’t say how, why, what and so forth. That’s all I can say.”
At the same time Arum who initially threatened to sue Pacquiao for alleged violation of a specific provision in his contract for the November 18 fight which said he couldn’t sign with another promoter until after the fight, has refrained from filing suit fanning speculations that Arum may have something in store.
