SUICO, SUICO AND SUICO HEADLINE OCT. 14 CARD By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Wed, 11 Oct 2006 A collection of the fighting Suico siblings will grace Cebu's boxing skyline on October 14 as Randy Suico and his nephews Benedict and Apol, grace the mammoth event this Saturday at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex. "This is a huge event with a big budget, and I'm bringing no less than the very popular Suico fighters in front of their hometown fans," said promoter Rex 'Wakee' Salud in an interview yesterday. The three Suico fighters all grew up, and reside in Mandaue City, where they were all members of the city's amateur boxing team during their simonpure days. The hard-hitting Randy Suico vies for the vacant OPBF lightweight title against Thailand's Pongpetch Chuwatana in the 12-round main event. This will be Suico's comeback fight since absorbing a heart-breaking loss to WBA lightweight king Juan Diaz, who schooled Suico en route to a ninth-round technical knockout. "I have learned my lessons well in that fight. I am definitely a renewed fighter, and still hungry for a world crown," said the self-effacing Suico, who is managed by Japan's boxing guru Joe Koizumi. RP no. 6 flyweight Benedict Suico of Wakee Salud Stable, meanwhile, takes on Edwin Ubatay in a 10-round face-off. The younger Suico is set to bounce back from his failed attempt at winning the WBC International flyweight crown in South Africa. Apol Suico, an undefeated protege of Wakee Salud, guts it out with veteran Jun Pader in another 10-round match, slated to be his toughest test to date. In the night's co-featured championship bout, Cebu's Jerope Mercado shoots for the RP superfly title when he challenges fellow unbeaten fighter and reigning champ Eden Sonsona in another 12-round battle. Mercado, managed by Salud, dukes it out with the Rod Nazario-managed Sonsona, who hails from General Santos City. The rest of the card pits Bogie Delada against Mario De Asis; Gedion Amba against Rolly Mandahinog; and Daryl Pucdol versus Ronnie Penonal.
