PINOY PRIDE 13: NIGHT OF KNOCKOUTS AT THE WATERFRONT

PhilBoxing.com

Cebu City ? It turned out to be a very short night for Raul Hidalgo of Mexico.

AJ ?Bazooka? Banal, the defending WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight champion, landed a lightning left to the jaw and Hidalgo staggered and his legs briefly convulsed. Referee Danrex Tapdasan got in between the two boxers and seeing that Hidalgo was in no condition to continue, stopped the fight at 2:29 of the very first round.

?He was out on his feet. He was even trying to punch me,? Atty. Tapdasan told philboxing after the bout, ?He did not know where he was or who was in front of him.?

It was obvious after watching the replay on the large screen that it was the right decision. The referee is supposed to protect the life of the boxers and prevent any unnecessary or additional harm. It could have been more disastrous if he was hit again by a strong punch in a defenseless state.

Top photo: Referee Danrex Tapdasan stopped the contest after seeing that Hidalgo (L) was not fit to continue as Banal (R) celebrates.

Banal puts the finishing touches on Hidalgo.

Banal is declared the winner by TKO.

Fuentes sends Franco down for the count.

Albert Pagara sends Por Nubnum crashing on the canvas.

Javier Franco of Mexico was competitive for the first two rounds against Rocky Fuentes. But Fuentes' left hook found Franco's jaw in the 3rd but the Mexican got up at the count of eight.

Fuentes was cut on the left eyelid in the fifth by a clash of heads and this cost Franco a point. In the sixth round, a left to the ribs sent Franco down. He got up again but was sent back to the canvas with a hard right. Referee Tony Pesons waived it off at the 52 second mark.

Franco received assistance from the medical personnel at ringside but was able to walk out of the ring on his own.

?Prince? Albert Pagara knocked out Phupha Por Nobnum at 2:38 of the second round. The Thai fighter was sent crashing down twice by Pagara's thunderous right straight. He was out cold after the second knockdown and was assisted by medical personnel at ringside before recovering.

Arthur 'El Matador' Villanueva had a harder time than expected against the pressure fighting Rey Migreno. Migreno was cut on the top of the forehead due to a clash of heads in the 2nd round but still maintained his aggression. A point was deducted from Villanueva.

In the 3rd, Migreno walked into a right straight and suffered a knockdown. But he continued to press and forced Villanueva to fight at close range. Non-stop exchange of punches ensued in the subsequent rounds. Villanueva tried to box from a distance but Migreno pressed forward. In the seventh, Migreno was deducted a point for low blows. In the 8th, Migreno targeted Villanueva's body but his effort was not enough. The scores read 76-73,76-74 and 77-72 all for Villanueva.

Roma Rate stopped Jade Yagahon in four rounds of a scheduled eight rounder. Yagahon was knocked down twice in the 4th. Official time ? 1:45.
