BARBOSA, PARAGUA OFF TO GOOD START IN LA UNION OPEN CHESS

GRANDMASTERS Oliver Barbosa and Mark Paragua got off to a blazing start by posting victories in the opening round of the 7th La Union Open Rapid Chess Championship at the Ortega Gym in San Fernando City, La Union on Monday.

The No.1 seed Barbosa from Taytay, Rizal subdued No.26 Johnny Corrales of Cebu while the no.3 seed Paragua from Meycauyan-Marilao, Bulacan routed No.29 Ben Polao of Iligan City.

Sharing the limelight are No.2 GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. who won by default over No.27 Johnny Torralba of Tagbilaran, Bohol, No.4 GM Darwin Laylo of Marikina City who dealt No.30 Michael Manago of San Fernando City, La Union and No.5 IM Rolando Nolte of Quezon City who brought downed No. 32 Samantha Glo Revita of Rosales, Pangasinan.

Other renowned players who won their respective first round matches were No.6 GM Richard Bitoon of Medellin, Cebu, No.7 IM Oliver Dimakiling of Davao City, No.8 IM Ronald Dableo of Manila, No.9 IM Yves Ranola of Caloocan City, No.10 IM Emmanuel Senador of Iloilo, No.11 IM Chito Garma of Manila, No.12 FM Adrian Pacis of Mandaluyong City, No.13 FM Daniel Causo of Manila,No.15 Efren Arguelles of Tanauan City, Batangas and No.16 NM Edmundo Gatus of Manila. No.28 Esmail Abas of Zamboanga drew with No. 14 NM Ali Branzuela of Manila.

Defending champion Asia's First GM Eugene Torre begged off from the tournament to help tournament organizer engineer Joseph Dumuk to run the four-day competition sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by it's chairman/president Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr. offers P50,000 to the champion in the event supported by Governor Manuel C. Ortega of La Union, Mayor Pablo C. Ortega of San Fernando City, Rep. Victor F. Ortega, Abono Partylist Rep. Francisco Emmanuel R. Ortega and official hotel Villa Estrella Resort.

In the Tuesday's second round, Barbosa will meet Arguelles on Board 1, Antonio opposite Causo on Board 2, Paragua versus No. 17 Roel Abelgas of Cavite on Board 3, Laylo will square off with Gatus on Board 4 and Nolte goes up against No. 19 FM Paulo Bersamina of Pasay City on Board 5.
