BARBOSA, PARAGUA OFF TO GOOD START IN LA UNION OPEN CHESS PhilBoxing.com Tue, 13 Mar 2012 GRANDMASTERS Oliver Barbosa and Mark Paragua got off to a blazing start by posting victories in the opening round of the 7th La Union Open Rapid Chess Championship at the Ortega Gym in San Fernando City, La Union on Monday. The No.1 seed Barbosa from Taytay, Rizal subdued No.26 Johnny Corrales of Cebu while the no.3 seed Paragua from Meycauyan-Marilao, Bulacan routed No.29 Ben Polao of Iligan City. Sharing the limelight are No.2 GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. who won by default over No.27 Johnny Torralba of Tagbilaran, Bohol, No.4 GM Darwin Laylo of Marikina City who dealt No.30 Michael Manago of San Fernando City, La Union and No.5 IM Rolando Nolte of Quezon City who brought downed No. 32 Samantha Glo Revita of Rosales, Pangasinan. Other renowned players who won their respective first round matches were No.6 GM Richard Bitoon of Medellin, Cebu, No.7 IM Oliver Dimakiling of Davao City, No.8 IM Ronald Dableo of Manila, No.9 IM Yves Ranola of Caloocan City, No.10 IM Emmanuel Senador of Iloilo, No.11 IM Chito Garma of Manila, No.12 FM Adrian Pacis of Mandaluyong City, No.13 FM Daniel Causo of Manila,No.15 Efren Arguelles of Tanauan City, Batangas and No.16 NM Edmundo Gatus of Manila.
