RODEL MAYOL SPECIAL ON ?THE MAIN EVENT? ON SUNDAY

PhilBoxing.com

A one hour special on former world champion Rodel Mayol who gets another crack at the world title when he battles World Boxing Association flyweight champion Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez of Mexico on March 24 will be telecast on the top-rating weekly boxing show ?The Main Event? telecast on AKTV over IBC 13 on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.

The show which is a two-part series will feature Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez the following Sunday so Filipino fight fans will get a chance to assess the chances of Mayol against the hard-hitting Mexican.

Produced by Viva Sports, ?The Main Event? will highlight some of the fights of the 30 year old Mayol, nicknamed ?Kid Rapido? who has a record of 30-5-2 with 22 knockouts.

This will include the fight in which Mayol won the WBC title in somewhat controversial fashion with a 2nd round TKO of highly favored Edgar Sosa in Mexico when Sosa was dropped after Rodel opened up a cut over Sosa?s left cheek with an accidental head-butt and caught him on the ropes with a flurry of punches forcing the stoppage. It was later discovered that Sosa had a fractured cheekbone and although his handlers vehemently protested the decision it was upheld by WBC executive secretary Mauricio Sulaiman who was at ringside.

Highlights of Mayol?s title defense against another Mexican Omar Nino Romero in which the fight ended in a technical draw in the 3rd round will show that Omar Nino Romero caught Mayol with several low blows and connected with a punch when he was being cautioned by referee Vic Drakulich for the low blow, knocking Mayol out cold. He had to be taken out of the ring on a stretcher but surprisingly Nino Romero was not disqualified. However, the technical draw meant that Mayol retained his title.

When Mayol lost the title in a rematch with Omar Nino Romero on June 19, 2010 he was deducted one point in round two and another in round 5 for an accidental head-butt which opened up cuts on the eyebrows of Romero.
