PONGSAKLEK RETAINS TITLE IN ROUND ONE ROUND NO CONTEST By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 23 Dec 2011 Thai veteran Pongsaklek Wonjongkam successfully defends his WBC flyweight title in an obvious mismatch against Japan?s Hirofumi Mukai at the 11th Infantry Regiment headquarters in Bangkok today when the Japanese challenger was badly cut. following an accidental clash of heads at 0:47 of the opening round and the fight ended up as a no contest.. The 34 year old Pongsaklek maintained his impressive record of 83-3-2 with 45 knockouts while his 26 year old challenger Mukai has only 5 wins with 1 loss and 1 draw to his name and no knockouts. The mismatch is accentuated by the fact that the Thai world champion has fought a total of 572 riunds while the challenger has only gone a total of 50 rounds raising serious questions on how such a fight was sanctioned. Chances for a unification bout between WBO flyweight champion Brian Viloria of the Philippines who recently retained his title with a smashing 8th round TKO victory over former light flyweight champion and Ring Magazine?s No. 9 pound for pound ranked Giovanni Segura appear to have been given a boost by the fact that Pongsaklek hardly worked up a sweat in his fight against Mukai. Viloria told us after the win over the favored Segura ?What I really want to do is a unification with one of the champions> mentioning the names of Pongsaklek and WBA champion Hernan Marquez. On the undercard of the abbreviated Pongsaklek-Mukai title fight, Thailand?s Kompayak Porpramook scored a spectacular 10th round knockout victory over WBC light flyweight champion Adrian Hernandez of Mexico in an action-packed bout in which both fighters traded big shots. Porpramook ended the fight with a devastating right hand that dropped Harnandez who was counted out.d pne The 29 year old Porpramook improved his record to 44-3 with 30 knockouts while the 25 year old Hernandez dropped to 22-2-1 with 14 knockouts. While the newly crowned champion had beaten several Filipino fighters in his career Hernandez scored a 4th round knockout over Rodel Mayol on February 9, 2008.
