PHL MEMORY TEAM FINISH SECOND OVER-ALL AT WORLD 'OLYMPIC' MEMORY GAMES

GUANGZHOU, CHINA---THE Philippine Memory Team has completed a successful campaign at the conclusion of 20th World Memory Championship (WMC) here at the Mount River Resort Hotel in Guangzhou, China on Friday.

The Philippine Memory Team was composed of Johann Randall Abrina, Roberto Racasa, Christopher Carandang, Mark Anthony Castaneda, Axelyancy Cowan Tabernilla, Erwin Balines, Mark Anthony Adarlo, team manager and delegation head Aurelio "Reli"de Leon and head coach Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. finished with a silver medal in the team competition.

"This is our early Christmas gift to the Filipino people worldwide. We hope this victory will unite all the Filipino and support the memory games," said sportsman Aurelio "Reli" de Leon, team manager and delegation head of the Philippine Memory Team.

?This proves once again that the Filipino can be at par with the world?s best memory athletes. And with ample training and preparation, we can even become world champion. We believe that memory games is what the Filipino needs to have a better quality of education. And finally we are very optimistic that memory games will bring honor to our countries in future International competition," added RP and US chess master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr., head coach of the Philippine Memory Team.

Powerhouse China took home the gold medal in front of the home crowd while Mongolia captured the bronze medal in the event that includes the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Poland, Japan, Uzbekistan, South Africa, India, Hongkong, Singapore, Malaysia, Maldives and Indonesia with a total of 121 competitors.

Some of the stand-out results included:

- Johann Randall Abrina, the 29-year-old UP Sports Psychology graduate student from Barangay Wackwack in Mandaluyong bag the bronze medal in the Historical/Future Dates category.

- Mark Anthony Castaneda from Mandaluyong became first Filipino Grandmaster of Memory. The 23-year-old Rizal Technological University Mandaluyong BS ECE graduate student memorized a 1,140 digit numbers in an hour en route to his 1st grandmaster (GM) norm. He memorized a deck of card (equivalent to 52 playing cards) in 1 minute and 10 seconds in the speed card category for his 2nd GM norm. Castaneda memorized 13 deck of cards (equivalent to 676 playing cards) in an hour en route to his 3rd and final GM norm.

-Erwin Balines also from Mandaluyong City won 2 GM norms. The 23-year-old PUP-Manila BS ECE graduate student memorized a 1,380 digit numbers in an hour en route to his 1st grandmaster (GM) norm. He memorized a deck of card (equivalent to 52 playing cards) in 1 minute and 19 seconds in the speed card category for his 2nd GM norm.

Joy Rojas II and chairman Margie Juico, Mandaluyong City mayor Benhur Abalos Jr., Mandaluyong City representative Neptali "Boyet" Gonzales II, Bagong Henerasyon Party-List representative Bernadette Herrera-Dy, Hermie Esguerra of Herma Group of companies, St. Francis Square?s Luke Rojas, Bicycle playing cards, ACCEL's Willy Ortiz, Dra. Regina Canlas of Makati Medical Center, PBA legend and fomrer senator Robert "Sonny" Jaworski, Terry Capistrano, Philippine Sports Commission headed by it's chairman Richie Garcia and commissioner Chito Loyzaga, Philippine Olympic Committe president Peping Cojuangco and secretary-general Steve Hontiveros and Human Plus Pro Biotics.
