REMEMBER THIS MOMENT IN TIME

PhilBoxing.com

September 04, 2009, Casino Rama, Ontario, Canada. The second youngest Filipino World Champion, WBO Superflyweight Division, MARVELOUS MARVIN SONSONA.Via an impressive Unanimous Decision, Sonsona wrested the title from the veteran Puerto Rican, Jose 'Carita' Lopez. It was a beautiful sight to behold a teary-eyed youngster on his victory. It was a dream come true. The team Sonsona?s gamble on pairing the undefeated Sonsona ( 13 Wins (12 knockouts ) with a veteran world champion paid off.
Everybody happy!

Unfortunately, the joy and happiness did not last long. On November 21, 2009, Sonsona was forced to vacate his belt when he failed to make the 115 lb contracted weight for his first defense against Alejandro Hernandez of Mexico. The team decided that Sonsona had outgrown the weight limit. They did not force the issue of having Sonsona shed some more pounds since there were no more water to shed. The fight went on and ended in a draw.

The team did not give up on Sonsona. They got another world title fight for Sonsona. This time against a young undefeated Wilfredo Vasquez, Jr. for the vacant WBO World Superbantamweight Division (vacated by Juan Ma Lopez ) in Puerto Rico on February 27, 2011. Comparing Sonsona?s physique to the well-toned body muscles of Vasquez was just like comparing a stalk of local corn to its hybrid variety. Sonsona lost on the fourth round by TKO. This was his first loss.

Now, everybody did not have anything good to say about Marvin. They saw him as an undisciplined, irresponsible boxer. After earning millions on his first world title fights, Sonsona felt that he has to enjoy what he earned. He stopped training and spent time with his friends. He forgot about boxing for the past 17 months. So much so that his management team did not bother to schedule him any fights. There was a time that he came back for two weeks.

After that, he was not seen again. Back to the drawing boards again. Until three days before his 21st birthday this year, 2011. He arrived and told his promoter, Sammy Gello-ani of SGG Promotions that he is coming back and this time for good. Gello-ani did not promise him a fight right away. Sonsona has to show him first that he is serious.

He trains religiously and vigorously at the Omega Boxing Gym daily and does a lot of road work. Seeing how determined Sonsona is to redeem his name, Gello-ani gave him an activity fight ? a hard fight. He is being matched with an equally young and fast Mexican fighter in the person of Carlos Jacobo who is known as the Flash of Lightning because of his speed. Because being a former world champion does not deserve to be paired with mediocre opponents so that you can get back on your feet. Since you were a WORLD CHAMPION, you have to fight someone who can give you the much deserve competition.

So, on October 15, 2011 ( Saturday ) at the Hoops Dome, Lapulapu City, Marvelous Marvin Sonsona will once again show the boxing fans that he is here to stay and be a world champion again.

OFFICIAL WEIGH-IN and PRESS CONFERENCE will be held at the new and huge J CENTER MALL in A. S. Fortuna Street, Mandaue City at 11:00 o?clock in the morning on October 14, 2011 ( Friday ). It will be FREE TO THE PUBLIC.
