CHARLY SUAREZ LOSES HEARTBREAKER IN WORLD BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS

PhilBoxing.com

Just when it looked as though Filipino lightweight Charly Suarez was getting into his rhythm in his opening bout at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan against Ecuador?s Luis Enrique Porozo Mina, but the judges thought otherwise and deprived Suarez of the win with a 11-13 heartbreaker.

Porozo was dropped in the opening round when Suarez connected with what he himself described as a cracking right to the china which the referee ruled as a slaip. To add insult to injury Porozo was given the round by a narrow one point margin 4-3.

Suarez fought back in round two and connected with some telling blows that wobbled the knees of the Ecuadorian but only enjoyed a 5-4 edge which helped the talented Filipino to tie the count at 8-8 going into the decisive third and final round.

Just when the Philippine delegation felt the multi-titled Suarez was on his way, the Ecuadorian somehow won the third and final round 5-3 to eliminate Suarez and hand the Philippines its third successive setback after a blazing 3-0 start which was kicked off by then impressive showing of light flyweight Mark Anthony Barriga followed by the cliff-hanger one point victories of 2010 Asian Games flyweight gold medalist Rey Saludar and 2006 Doha Asian Games bantamweight gold medalist Joan Tipon.

The disappointing loss of Suarez follows two successive setbacks suffered by Delfin Boholst and Rolando Tacuyan last Thursday and Friday.

Delegation head and Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines executive director Ed Picson reported that the entire team was aghast at the 13-11 decision which they thought was a reverse of their assessment of the fight.

Picson said ?We really felt Charly did more than enough to win but we have to respect the decision. We need o concentrate on the remaining task at hand.?

Picson noted ?Charly took the decision like a man. We can do no less.?

Needing to win three bouts, the remaining Filipinos in the hunt for a slot in the 2012 London Olympics are Saludar who battles rugged Safoviddin Yusufi of Tajikistan, Barriga who clashes with fancied Patrick Barnes of Ireland on Sunday and Tipon who clashes with Zhang Jiawei of China on Monday.

The trip of the national delegation was funded by the Philippine Sports Commission and the national boxers major private sponsor PLDT of ABAP chairman Manny Pangilinan with support from Adidas, Powerade, Accel and Clusivol.
