THREE PINOYS ENTER GUINNESS WORLD SERIES OF POOL ROUND OF 32 By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 15 Jul 2011 Defending champion Jundel Mazon, World No. 1 Dennis Orcollo and Carlo Biado have barged into the Guinness World Series of Pool 10-Ball Challenge in Jakarta. The three continued their unbeaten run in the double-elimination rounds and became the first Filipinos to enter the knockout stage of the prestigious tournament. Orcollo made quick work of Indonesia?s Sumaryadi 6-1 before besting Canada?s Adam Smith 6-2. Orcollo quickly established his superiority with a break and run out in the opening rack but the Canadian clawed back and kept pace with the WPA World No.1 and 8-Ball champion in the early going to tie the count at 2-2. With the Filipino leading 3-2 Smith?s loosely tucked-in shirt proved disastrous as it grazed the 8-Ball while he was cueing up for the pink 4. The resulting foul was all that Orcollo needed to seal the deal, capitalizing on the careless mistake to clean up the table. The Pinoy cue-master never looked back as he rattled off three racks in a row to win 6-2. After the match Orcollo stated: ?In this race-to-6 stage, it?s important that you start the match well. Any mistake can easily lead to a loss because it?s such a short game and the players competing are so talented. So far, I?m pleased with how I am playing and I look forward to bringing this momentum to the next round and hopefully all the way to the championship.? Mazon whose awesome break is a feature of his game also took care of business in impressive fashion with a methodical dismantling of his Indonesian rival Rico Herman, winning by a 6 ? 0 shutout. Emerging Filipino star Carlo Biado ended the hopes of countryman Jeffrey De Luna with a nerve-wracking 6-5 win and then stunned German ace and former World Pool 9-Ball champion Thorsten Hohmann with a come from behind 6-5 victory. Soft spoken Warren Kiamco who lost a 6-5 cliffhanger to Chinese-Taipei star Ko Pin Yi rebounded in the losers bracket with a 6-1 win over Indonesia?s Tejo Kusuma to stay alive. Other players already through to the next round are: Yukio Akagariyama (JPN) def. Ari Hartanto (INA) 6 ? 3, Ibrahim Bin Amir (MAS) def. Sahroni (INA) 6 ? 3 and Rudy Susanto (INA) def. Lum Wai Keong (SIN) 6 - 4 Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
