REY BELTRAN HANDS FREDDIE ROACH A NICE EARLY BIRTHDAY GIFT By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Sat, 05 Mar 2011 Woodland Hills, CA:- It?s not too often that one can have the pleasure of covering a fight card just down the street where he lives. But tonight that pleasure was mine. Down the street from my home is Warner Center?s classy Marriott Hotel. It is where Art of Boxing together with Bash Boxing Promotions held a fight card tonight. In the semi-main event, Rey Beltran, a long time Pacquiao sparmate fought a very determined Carlos Vinan for the vacant USBA lightweight title. Beltran as many know is trained by Freddie Roach at his famous sweathouse in Hollywood called the Wildcard Gym. Beltran came out swinging when the first bell rung and he dominated the first round. But Vinan who appeared to be a slow starter, immediately rallied in round 2 and then extended the rally through round 3 and 4 placing Beltran behind on points. Beltran woke up in round 5 and started turning the table on Vinan. By round 6th Beltran was throwing combos almost at will while Vinan retreated to a defensive mode and only occasionally throwing anything that is worth a point. Beltran continued the assault in round 7 hitting Vinan with heavy shots to the head that signaled that the end may soon be near. Before round 8 started, Vinan?s corner advised the referee that their man is done and just like Oscar de la Hoya against Manny Pacquiao, Viuan, quit on his stool. With the win, Beltran wins the vacant USBA lightweight title. The USBA title is a nice gift to Freddie Roach who will be celebrating his birthday tomorrow, Saturday March 5th. In the main event, Yusaf Mack who is trained by Nazim Richardson beat Otis Griffin through 12 rounds of uneventful fight. However, Mack, knocked down Griffin in round 12, the only KD in the whole 12 round fight and that was enough for him to score a split decision. The scores are 114-113, 116-111 for Griffin and 119-108 for Mack. Mack thus won the USBA Light Heavyweight title/IBF eliminator. Top photo: Rey Beltran (R) connects with a right at Carlos Vinan.
