MOSLEY?S DAD SAYS THE PACQUIAO FIGHT IS FOR MONEY By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 23 Dec 2010 The father of 39 year old Shane Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KO?s) has admitted that the fight of his son against pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KO?s) is all about the money. Jack Mosley was quoted as saying that if his son fought outside the promotional arm of Golden Boy and stood to make three times more money, he should. Well known boxing writer Lem Satterfield, Editor of AOL FanHouse and news editor of BoxingScene.com reported that Mosley confirmed his purse guaranteed for the Pacquiao welterweight title fight on May 7 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena would be around $5 million. Satterfield said that with incentives Mosley could wind up earning a career-high amount which would surpass the $7 million Mosley earned when he lost by a twelve round unanimous decision to Floyd Mayweather Jr last May. Mosley was quoted as saying ?We came to an agreement with everything involved including the financial end of it.? Top Rank promoter Bob Arum and trainer Freddie Roach who were in the Philippines to attend Pacquiao?s 32nd birthday bash in his hometown if General Santos City last December 17 put forward three separate proposals for Pacquiao?s consideration but that appeared to be all for show. Arum and Roach themselves removed undefeated Andre Berto (27-0, 21 KO?s) by saying he hadn?t beaten any real name fighter and was not a draw while the third option, Juan Manuel Marquez (51-5-1, 38 Kos) had priced himself out of the picture by demanding a $5 million purse. Marquez who is handled by Golden Boy Promotions was asking for a purse which was twice as much as he received for his fight against Mayweather where he was badly beaten. The former trainer of Mosley, his father Jack Mosley was quoted as saying that his son ?already has the skills I thought him since he was ten years old? but in order to beat Pacquiao, ?I need to train Shane to get him in shape. If I train him. He?s going to win. That?s for sure.? While most boxing writers and aficionados have come out against the fight claiming it?s a mismatch and Pacquiao has nothing to gain by fighting an aging Mosley who was beaten by Mayweather and held to a lackluster draw by Sergio Mora, Roach thinks differently. The celebrated trainer told the Inquirer when discussing the Mosley fight some days ago Roach told the Inquirer "styles make fights and Manny and Shane is a great fight and its a hard fight. You know Manny has speed but Mosley does also so you have too fast guys in there and he (Mosley) can give us a little trouble and he is experienced also." Roach said Mosley is "a different type of fighter than Antonio Margarito and a much better boxer. Guys that come to Manny, he loves that. Shane will try to box him. He will come to him much more intelligently" than Margarito. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
