PACQUIAO IN THE EYE OF THE STORM AS NORTHERN LUZON BRACES FOR SUPER TYPHOON JUAN (MEGI) By Dong Secuya PhilBoxing.com Mon, 18 Oct 2010 BAGUIO CITY -- Boxing's pound for pound king and Philippine congressman Manny Pacquiao is set to work out at around 2pm today at the Coyeesan Hotel here in front of a select group of Philippine media approximately the same time as super typhoon Juan (International Code Name: Megi) carrying a sustained winds of 287 kph (187 mph) makes a landfall at the northeastern towns of Isabela province also making a direct hit to this city before existing the country in the western towns of Ilocos in the next 24 hours. Pacquiao is in the tailend of his training in the Philippines in preparation for his Nov. 13 fight against Mexican star Antonio Margarito in Texas and is set to break his Baguio camp Wednesday before departing for Los Angeles on Saturday, Oct. 23 together with his team headed by multi-awarded trainer of the year Freddie Roach. But the super typhoon, already sending rains to this city as we write, has threathened to disrupt Pacquiao's training and even his departure back to Manila if "Juan's" wrath will cause damage to the roads and bridges in this moutainous region. The Philippines' National Disaster Coordinating Council has advised people in the Northern Luzon area to prepare and brace for its impact even as some roads in the province of Apuyao have already been rendered impassable this morning due to landslides. Pacquiao's assistant trainer and close friend Buboy Fernandez, in a conversation with us this morning, recalled when super typhoon 'Reming' hit his adopted hometown of Bicol where he said he saw houses where wiped out in a matter of seconds at the height of typhoon 'Reming'. "Only when you experience the wrath of a typhoon first hand that you fear of another powerful typhoon approaching. And this typhoone (Juan) is reportedly stronger than 'Reming'. And when Pacquiao, also known as 'the typhoon from the Pacific', hit the mitts during his public work out today, everyone watching Asia's boxing legend should also be wary of a real super typhoon that is coming their way shortly.
