EDRIN DAPUDONG REVEALS 'TRUE SELF' PhilBoxing.com Thu, 16 Sep 2010 Cancun, Mexico - With four days to go before he defends the World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver Flyweight title, 24-year-old Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong revealed his "true and real" division in boxing as he easily hit the flyweight limit of 112 lbs. after an intial attempt to cut down on his water intake prompting conditioning coach Justin Fortune to advise Braveheart Boxing Club chief trainer Noli Pinol to give the Filipino champion solid food. "Edrin is just really a junior flyweight and he can easily make the 108-pound weight limit," said Noli. But while Dapudong is a junior flyweight fighting in the flyweight division, his handlers see no problem or threat to his championship belt. "While he is just a junior flyweight, Edrin is very tall even in the flyweight division and he can take punches thrown by bigger guys," said Noli. Dapudong, who is 5' 5" tall, sparred with two junior featherweights in his last two sparring sessions at the Maywood Gym in California before coming down to Cancun to defend his title on Friday against Mexican flyweight champion Wilbert "Hurricane" Uicab. Former North Cotabato governor Manny Pinol, who manages Dapudong, said the flexibility of the Filipino champion to move up and down in the junior flyweight and flyweight division is in fact an advantage. "Given a chance to fight Omar Nino (WBC lightflyweight champion) or Giovanni Segura (WBA/WBO lightflyweight champion), Edrin could easily shed off weight and go down to the 108-pound weight division," he said. In the same manner, he added, if given a chance to fight Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (WBC Flyweight champion) or Pingo Miranda (WBO flyweight champion), Dapudong could easily make the 112-pound weight limit. Before winning the WBC Flyweight Silver title (formerly the Interim title), Dapudong was the WBO Oriental Junior Flyweight Champion, a title which he won after he gave up the WBO Asia Pacific Youth Miniflyweight title. The move to the flyweight division was a result of a last minute offer to fight former World No. 1 flyweight contender Jesus Jimenez in Tepic, Mexico on June 19 for the vacant WBC Silver Flyweight Title. Dapudong knocked out Jimenez in the first round. Yesterday (Tuesday in Mexico), with two days to go before the scheduled weigh-in on Thursday, Dapudong, after a short run along the avenue by the side of thelim scenic Nichupte Laguna in Cancun, tipped the scale at 114, just two pounds over the weight limit. "That's a very comfortable area. He can easily shed off the two pounds before the weigh in on Thursday,' said trainer Noli. Dapudong has easily adapted to the Cancun climate which is just a little hotter than the climate in North Cotabato. The fight on Friday (Saturday morning in the Philippines) will be held at the huge Cancun Convention Center which is about five minutes away from the Gran Caribe Hotel where the Philippine delegation is staying.
