DREAM VENDETTA: Michael Domingo vs Luis Melendez By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Wed, 31 Mar 2010 ALA Promotions formally announced their blockbuster May 1st fight card which features a captivating main event. Michael Domingo of Libac, Sultan Kudarat will face Luis Melendez of Colombia, the man responsible for sending his stablemate Z ?The Dream? Gorres to the hospital for emergency neurosurgery. Domingo talked to Cebu sportswriters during a press conference held Wednesday noon at Patio Isabel, Talamban,Cebu City. ?I am very happy to be given this opportunity to fight Melendez. I want to show the world that we Filipinos do not back away from a fight.? Domingo said. ?This fight is personal. This fight is a very emotional one for me. I cried when I learned what happened to Gorres.? He added. ?I want to show Gorres what I can do.? Domingo was supremely confident when asked by sportswriters for his fight prediction. ?Melendez comes forward. I love opponents who come forward and fight, not those who run and seem ready to jump out of the ring. If the fight ends early so much the better.? ALA Promotions President Michael Aldeguer said that this will be one of the biggest fights of the year. ?We tried to get a title shot for Domingo but he has been avoided by Fernando Montiel and Yohnny Perez. This will be Domingo?s first stint as a main event fighter so he can show the world how good he really is. We hope this will lead to a higher world ranking.? Domingo (39W ? 14 L ? 2D, 17 KO?s) has a reputation for being a difficult opponent and a giant killer. He has beaten the likes of former WBO world champion Ratanachai Sor Vorapin and perennial world title challenger Jose Navarro. Domingo was also part of the Philippines? victorious Boxing World Cup squad that beat Mexico in 2007. Melendez (26W-5L-1D, 21 KO?s) is expected to arrive five days before the fight. He also has an axe to grind as his trainer was reported to have protested what they perceived as an early ringing of the final bell after Gorres got up from the 10th round knockdown and thus the Filipino won by unanimous decision. His power is unquestionable as he scored a knockdown over WBO champ Fernando Montiel before losing. Other Filipino fighters scheduled to see action will be Jimrex Jaca, James Bacon and Jason Pagara, who was initially scheduled to fight in Dubai but the rules there state that they will not allow boxers below 21 years old. The May One boxing promotion is billed as ?HANGAD NA PAGHIHIGANTI? and will be held at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino, Lahug, Cebu City. TV coverage is courtesy of ABS-CBN and fight time is at 6 PM.
