Gorres Holding On To The Dream!

PhilBoxing.com

Los Angeles, California - After the jubilation of Manny’s historic win against Miguel Angel Cotto, it is now time for me to visit to one of the Pinoy boxers I am close to, Z “The Dream” Gorres which was hospitalized because of unfortunate accident. He is a fellow Visayan, born in Nasipit, Agusan del Sur in Mindanao but is now a resident of Mandaue City , Cebu. Like Manny Pacquiao, Z Gorres is also a longtime friend. We used to hang out together because we have the same manager, Atty. Rudy Salud and we even trained and lived in one house in Florida during the time that I was still under ALA Stable’s management.

He is a good father and a good friend. I was happy with his win over Luis Melendez of Colombia but was very sad when he collapsed in the ring right after the fight. He was rushed to the University Medical Center of Las Vegas for an emergency operation to drain the blood in his brain. His operation was successful and is now on the road to recovery.

It was November 15, right after the Thanksgiving Mass for Manny’s victory at Mandalay Hotel ballroom, my wife and I went to University Medical Center to see check on his condition. We went to the hospital at around 3:45pm with my wife’s relative George and Precy Rufino but the visiting hour starts at 4pm so we waited at the lobby for more or less 15 minutes. He was in the Trauma Center. Only two visitors at a time were allowed so Goody, my wife, and I were the first ones to enter the room.

Cellular phones and cameras were not allowed. The nurse told us that we can speak to him even if he was in a state of medically induced coma. It was hard seeing him seemingly so helpless. But I managed to give him encouraging words. The nurse talked with us and we were a happy upon knowing that he was able to give a “thumbs up” sign. That moment, I know that Z Gorres is on the road to recovery. He is a boxer, a fighter and is not the one to back down on a fight. This time, he is fighting to save his life and I know that he will win it. We stayed in his room for 30 minutes. As soon as we left the Trauma Center, we bumped into Wakee Salud and Buboy Fernandez which also made a visit to our unfortunate friend.

In the boxing profession, accidents happen. Whatever happened to Z Gorres is an occupational hazard. It comes with the package of being a boxer…we put our life on the line to give glory and pride to our family and to our country. Boxing is a bloody game but it is also an honorable profession and just like the rest of the Pinoy boxers, I am happy I am in this profession.

We will be touching down on Manila’s soil in the early morning of November 20 with Manny Pacquiao. It will be nice seeing familiar faces once again. I want to say thank you to boxing enthusiasts I met in LA, Aries Valencerina and Arnel Evidente, for hosting a nice dinner for me, my wife and fellow Pinoy boxer, Diosdado Gabi at Palms Thai Restaurant in Los Angeles, California. Maraming maraming salamat!

Si Gerry Peñalosa para sa isa na naming balitaan. Hanggang sa muling pagkikita.
