OSCAR DE LA HOYA CELEBRATES OFFICIAL GRAND OPENING OF OSCAR DE LA HOYA ÁNIMO CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL

Boxing Legend Hosts Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony on Thursday, October 29 at 10 am PT

WHO: Ten-Time World Champion fighter in six weight divisions, Olympic Gold Medalist and the pride of East Los Angeles, Oscar de la Hoya, Steve Barr Founder Green Dot Public Schools, Marco Petruzzi CEO of Green Dot, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Councilman Jose Huizar and other distinguished guests.


WHAT: Students, parents and community leaders will come together for the ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the official grand opening of the permanent Oscar de la Hoya Ánimo Charter High School facility. The school was formed in 2003 with a donation of one million dollars by De La Hoya along with an additional 3.5 million dollar donation by De La Hoya in 2008 to support Green Dot and its efforts to transform education in Los Angeles. Until now, classes were taking place in a temporary site while construction was being completed at the permanent location. After five years of construction and $26 million state bond funds, De La Hoya will cut the ribbon to officially open his namesake high school.

De La Hoya, whose Oscar de la Hoya Foundation is dedicated to helping underprivileged families in East Los Angeles, has been actively involved with his namesake school since its inception in 2003 and has delivered the commencement speech twice.

The Oscar de la Hoya Ánimo Charter High School, which is operated by Green Dot Public Schools, has graduated 332 students with 72% going on to four-year universities. The Oscar de la Hoya Ánimo Charter High Schoolis a California Distinguished school, ranked #53 in the Nation by US News and World Report, and recognized by Newsweek.
