KOKIETGYM GETS BACK AT EGERA

Thailand’s Petch Kokietgym (8W - 1 L) won the vacant WBO Asia-Pacific superflyweight title with a twelve round split decision win over Jason Egera (11W-4L) of the Philippines. The protagonists started tentatively with probing jabs but opened up in round three and started trading bombs. Kokietgym would have the advantage at ring center where he could throw effective combos while Egera scored when he mugged the Thai near the ropes and at the corners.

Just like their first fight last May, where Egera won by eight round split decision, this was difficult to score as both boxers took turns leading and countering. They both had their moments in almost all the rounds. They ended the final round with an exciting exchange of power shots. The scores read: 115-113 on two judges’ scorecards for Kokietgym and 117-111 on one judge for Egera.

SINGWANCHA EDGES LABAO IN A THRILLER

Jesus Muzaka Singwancha and Rey Labao engaged in what could arguably be the best fight seen in Cebu this year. Singwancha, originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo but now fights out of Thailand, won the vacant WBO Asia Pacific superfeatherweight title by a close twelve round unanimous decision.

The Black Tiger pressed the action from the opening bell. Powerful hooks were exchanged in the first round but Labao was retreating in round two as Muzaka Singwancha took his shots well and continued to throw haymakers. In the succeeding rounds, the southpaw Labao scored with his powerful left straight but he could not keep Singwancha off him.

The bull strong Singwancha was relentless in his attack and punished Labao on the ropes. In a breathtaking eighth round both fighters took turns staggering each other. In the later rounds Labao’s body shots slowed down Singwancha. In the twelfth, Labao effectively darted in and out and scored repeatedly but it was too late.

The scorecards read: 115 -113 on all three judges. This was Labao’s second career loss. Muzaka (16W- 7L, 8KO’s) is the best and gutsiest African boxer to fight here in the Philippines in years. The right side of his face was slightly swollen in the end but he got his regional title belt.

CATUBAY SAVES THE DAY

Federico “Magnifico” Catubay beat Thailand’s Pramuansak Posuwan by split decision in an eight round contest. Catubay started the fight clowning and taunting. Posuwan retaliated with two low blows that cost him a point deduction.

Catubay got into the Thai’s head with his antics highlighted by windmill punches and dangerously sticking out his tongue. Posuwan could not get untracked and the Filipino continued to score. Posuwan tried to box and go for the body but Catubay’s grabbing and hitting style bothered him. Things got serious in the seventh round but the fight ended like an ugly street brawl. The scores: 7-74 on two judges’ scorecards for Catubay and one judge had it 76-75 for Posuwan.

This was sweet revenge for Catubay who lost to Posuwan four years ago by seventh round TKO. Posuwan lost to Puerto Rican Jose Lopez last March for the WBO superflyweight world title by unanimous decision.

Lopez’ next challenger, Marvin Sonsona was in the audience watching the fights.

SUPPORTING BOUTS

Arnel Dunal and Daryl Pucdol fought to an eight round majority draw in a well fought lightweight contest. The scores: 76-76, 77-75, 76-76.

Jose Ocampo won by TKO over Jimmy Cescon who raised the white flag at 59 seconds of the second round. Andy Seneres cruised to an easy six round unanimous decision win over South Korean Jhonghwa Lee. The scorecards: 60-54, 59-55, 60-54.

Nino Suelo won by majority decision in six rounds over Richard Donaire in a bruising brawl. Donaire was down in round one. Suelo was deducted a point for an accidental headbutt that lead to a cut on Donaire’s right eyebrow. The scorecards: 57-55 on two judges for Suelo and one had it 56 all.

Edward Panerio won by unanimous decision over Jerome Buntog who went down twice in the fight. The scorecards - 58-53, 57-52, 57-52. Anthony Sabalde scored a dramatic four round unanimous decision win over Ervin Yamo. Sabalde was deducted a point for an accidental headbutt. Yamo was knocked down in the opening round but scored a knockdown in the fourth and final round. But Sabalde got up and knocked Yamo down in the dying seconds of the round to seal the win. The scores: 39-35 on all three judges.

Ryan Illustrisimo won a six round unanimous decision over John Paul Colon. The scores: 40-36, 40-36 and 39-37. In the first bout of the evening, Ivan Soriano beat JR Salvador by unanimous decision in four rounds. The scores: 40-36 on two judges and 39-37.

The fight card was held at the Naga City Sports Complex in Cebu last Friday and co-promoted by SGG Promotions and the Kokietgym of Thailand. It was aired live to Thailand and will be shown on a delayed basis on CCTN Ch 47’s Saturday afternoon boxing program “TKO”.
