A NEW STAR IS BORN! 'MARVELOUS' MARVIN SONSONA KO'S EX-WORLD CHAMP IN TWO ROUNDS PhilBoxing.com Fri, 29 May 2009 CEBU CITY--As Thursday night has been a night of super match ups, the country's foremost promoter Sammy Gello-ani has now produced a one of kind super kid from General Santos City, Philippines. The 18-year-old "Marvelous" Marvin Sonsona shined so bright that everyone was in disbelief of how a young prospect has so much power to dispose of a former world champion. He really proved to be a ?Marvelous? kid from Gen San, Philippines. It may no longer be a hype as everyone thought he was to be, as fight fans saw the helpless Wandee Singwangcha on the ring canvas in the second round, knocked out, gasping for oxygen to try to regain consciousness from a devastating Sonsona upper cut. It was surely a crowd pleasing knockout that showed why Marvin Sonsona is a prospect to be reckoned with and taken seriously. The tall and lanky Sonsona showed maturity and power in both hands that impressed the Cebuano fight fans who crowded the Cebu Coliseum to get a glimpse of the up-coming kid. After what he did to Singwangcha, he will surely be the talk of the town as many fight fans in Cebu will be anticipating his next return to the ring. Even the highly renowned referee Bruce Mctavish who was the third man in the ring of the Sonsona-Singwangcha bout was very impressed of the young up and comer. ?As thin looking as he is, I cannot believe the power this young kid holds? said Mctavish. ?He reminds me of a young Donaire with tremendous power in both hands, very talented, I believe this kid is going somewhere," added Mctavish. Sonsona?s manager, Dr. Rajon Yraola, explained that he was nervous about this match-up because a lot of people informed him that he was taking too much risk for a young Marvin to go up against a seasoned ex-world champ. ?We surely proved those people wrong," said Dr. Yraola. Everyone knew that Wandee Singwangcha was not only a veteran with 68 professional fights but was a formidable former world champion that had a lot of credibility against great Filipino contenders. The Thursday night fights from boxing capital Cebu, televised live broadcast to Thailand, was seen by many Thai fight fans, including President of Asia Box Promotions James Price of Thailand that got a look at the young prospect. In a phone conversation with James Price after the match of Sonsona he said, ?Give him couple of years to mature and he will be unstoppable, he will be the next big thing coming out of the Philippines." Meanwhile promoter Gello-ani informed that Team Sonsona wants a chance at the WBO world champion Omar Navarez of Argentina, he hopes that the WBO President Francisco Valcarcel reads about our Marvelous Marvin and the spectacular performance he had against a former world champion to get a chance at the world crown. ?We definitely look forward to Marvin Sonsona to be highly ranked next month after his terrific performance." ?Sonsona is now the WBO Asia Pacific Youth and today added the WBO Oriental strap in his showcase," said Gello-ani. ?We really want a chance at Omar Navarez the WBO World champion, we believe we can take him. ?Marvelous? Marvin is ready, we believe our Sonsona will handle him and become the youngest ever world champion coming out of the Philippines." ?We will not disappoint the Filipino fight fans, we will definitely win the title if given the chance. There is no if or buts about it, we have a world champion and it is surely in the making," Gello-ani stated. |
