PONCE DE LEON TARGETS 'BOOM BOOM' BAUTISTA By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Tue, 29 Jul 2008 CEBU CITY--Former World Boxing Organization (WBO) superbantam king Daniel Ponce de Leon is calling out Filipino Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista for a rematch of their first encounter which took place at the 'World Cup' in Sacramento, California last year. Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) vice-president Eric Gomez, in an exclusive interview here, has revealed that the Mexican slugger is willing to give Bautista a chance to redeem himself after he stopped the Bohol-raised fighter in the first round of that fight. "Ponce de Leon has told me he wants to fight Boom Boom again. I think if that fight takes place in the Philippines, that will be huge," said Gomez, who observes that the Filipino fans are still seething against Ponce de Leon after his win over Bautista and his controversial victory over Gerry Penalosa. De Leon has recently been dethroned by Puerto Rican Juan Manuel Lopez, but the luster of a possible rematch with Bautista remains high among Filipinos. A possible De Leon-Bautista clash can be made if television will back it up, says Gomez. While the Mexican fighter is not yet scheduled for a fight, Bautista will be defending his WBO Intercontinental title on August 30 against Eden Marquez at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel. A win by Bautista over Marquez will most likely put him in another fight sometime in November. The August 30 event is co-headlined by WBO minimumweight champion Donnie Nietes who will be defending his title for the first time against Eddy Castro.
