BOXING PROMOTER SAN PEDRO OPTIMISTIC IN CANADA TRIP

PhilBoxing.com

LOS ANGELES, California – With the postponement of his ward Jun Talape’s shot at the Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) super bantamweight title in Thailand from July to August 27, this year, fledging promoter and manager Jay R. San Pedro said he is hoping to stumble into gold mine for his more than 20 other boxers in Mandaluyong City in the Philippines in his trip to Canada.

“I will take a vacation for a while because Jun Talape’s title shot has been moved to August 27,” San Pedro, who owns the modern Tiger City boxing gym, said. “We might find some luck in Canada where boxing is also thriving.”

San Pedro, who visited his wife, did not reveal if he would meet some key promoters and officials of Canadian Professional Boxing Commission in Vancouver, but confirmed that “I am open to any possibility of forging a tie-up with top promoters there.”

OPBF No. 1 ranked and RP super bantamweight king Jun Talape will fight for OPBF crown currently worn by Wethya Sakmuangklaeng of Thailand in Bangkok.

In his recent fight in April 6, the 22-year-old Talape (17-5, 7 KO), a southpaw, drew with Yuya Miyagi in a 10-round non-title tiff in Shizuoka, Japan.

Talape has scored back-to-back unanimous decisions wins over Jake Verano and Roel Laguna in two defenses of his national crown before holding Miyagi to a controversial draw.

Sakmuangklaeng (74-4, 44 KO) will be making his sixth defense of the crown he won by TKO in the third round over Masakazu Sugawara in Nagoya, Japan on June 26, 2005.

The 31-year-old former Muai Thai sensation from Krasang, Buriram, Thailand defended the 122 lbs title by unanimous decision over Kyohei Tamakoshi in Kobe, Japan in his last title defense on June 3, 2007.

San Pedro said he personally attended to Talape’s needs outside and inside the ring. “That’s how I treat my boxers. They are like my family remembers. In fact, I jog with them regularly and I saw to it that all their needs as prize fighters are well taken care of,” San Pedro said.

He admitted that the postponement of Talape’s fight versus the Thai sensation will slightly affect their preparations as Talape has been preparing for the historic title shot since first week of July.

“But I have confidence in Jun Talape. He is the underdog but anything can happen once the two fighters start mauling each other,” he concluded.
