Filipino IM Garma trounce foes, stay in hunt for top finish By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Wed, 27 Nov 2024 Porto Santo Island, Portugal---Filipino International Master Chito Danilo Garma scored hard-earned wins to bounce back in contention after nine round of the 32nd FIDE World Senior Chess Championship on Tuesday, November 26, 2024 at the Hotel Baleira in Porto Santo Island, Portugal. Garma defeated FIDE Master Richard Vedder of the Netherlands in 40 moves of Ruy Lopez Opening using the white pieces to hike his output to 5.5 points for a share of 12th place in the 50 and above category, Standard Time control format. "I am happy with my performance today. I'll go out to win my last 2 remaining games for a possible top 10 finish in the Standard Time control format," said the 60 years old Sampaloc, Manila resident Garma. Garma earlier won the Blitz time control format. In the 65 over category, FIDE Master Mario Mangubat and International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad won their respective games to raise their total 5.0 points, a good for a share of 25th placers. The 66-year-old Minglanilla, Cebu bet Mangubat toppled Pal Magnussen of Sweden while the 68-year-old Camarines Norte native Bagamasbad trounced Christian Weiss of Germany. Mangubat won the Rapid event of the 65 over category. He is also bringing home the bronze medal in the Blitz format. Garma is set to play with IM Josep Anton Lacasa Diaz of Spain on Wednesday's tenth round; Mangubat goes up against Moshe Gal of Israel while Bagamasbad opposes FIDE Master Rolf Bergstrom of Sweden. PH delegation head and coach NM Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. is very confident that the PH woodpushers will perform well in the last 2 rounds. The Filipino chessers campaign is being supported by the Philippines Sports Commission headed by chairman Richard Bachmann, commissioner Edward Hayco, commissioner Olivia "Bong" Coo, National Chess Federation of the Philippines Chairman/ President Cong.
