International Master Daniel Quizon of the Philippines Upsets Super Grandmaster Dmitrij Kollars of Germany, Inches Closer to GM Title By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Fri, 13 Sep 2024 On the verge of his Grandmaster title, International Master Daniel Quizon upset Super Grandmaster Dmitrij Kollars in their top board encounter to prevent a possible shut out loss of the No. 51 seed Philippines in Round 2 of the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad being held at the BOK Sports Hall in Budapest, Hungary Friday morning. The number 7 seed Germany won the match after Super GMs Matthias Bluebaum (elo 2640), Alexander Donchenko (elo 2638) and Frederik Svane (elo 2640) defeated IM Paulo Bersamina (elo 2425), GM John Paul Gomez (elo 2480) and IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia (elo 2380), respectively. Playing black, Quizon (elo rating of 2490) prevailed over Kollars (elo rating of 2659) after 54 moves of Sicilian Defense, Richter-Rauzer Variation. The win inched closer Quizon to the coveted GM title. The Dasmarinas woodpusher, playing under the banner of mayor Jenny Barzaga, Coun. Kiko Barzaga and national coach FM Roel Abelgas now have a live rating of 2498, 2 points away to 2500 elo rating requirement. Quizon already has 3 GM norms under his belt. Quizon won his opening match against Fide Master Juan Pablo De Mey of Aruba (elo 1992) on Thursday to help the Philippines to a 4-0 victory over Aruba. The Philippines will face Madagascar on Friday night, Manila Time. In the distaff side, the number 47 seed Filipinas bowed to number 7 seed United States. WFM Shania Mae Mendoza (elo 2013) drew with IM Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova (elo 2380) in their top board encounter. However, WGM Janelle Mae Frayna (elo 2216), WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda (elo 2165) , and WNM Ruelle Canino (elo 2004), yielded to IMs Carissa Yip (elo 2386) , Alice Lee (elo 2384) , and Anna Zatonskih (elo 2320 ), in order. The Filipinas will meet number 92 Jordan in the third round.
