SPORTSCLOPEDIA 24: OSCAR DE LA HOYA OFFERS TO SIGN TERENCE CRAWFORD By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Mon, 30 Jan 2023 Oscar De La Hoya is targeting Terence Crawford. The Hall of Famer six-division champion aimed at signing WBO welterweight champion Terence "Bud" Crawford to the Golden Boy Promotions. An advertisement for De La Hoya's first DAZN event for 2023 showed a social media post of De La Hoya, Crawford and two-division champion Bernard Hopkins with the words "Big things brewing… #StayTuned." * * * De La Hoya told DAZN’s Chris Mannix: "Future plans for Terence Crawford. He wants to fight the big fights, against Errol Spence. I told him, ‘We can make that fight happen. Ryan Garcia versus Tank Davis is going to open a lot of doors for us that will lead to us doing business with PBC (Premier Boxing Champions). I told Crawford, ‘Let us present to you a schedule of fights leading up to Spence.’ I have all the confidence in the world that Crawford versus Spence will happen," as quoted by Boxingscene.com. * * * The superfight remains elusive until now. Crawford (39-0, 30 KOs) consistently pursued the undisputed welterweight championship against WBA/WBC/IBF champ Errol Spence Jr. (28-0, 22 KOs). The talks failed to materialize. * * * Crawford retained his WBO welterweight title and kept his undefeated record, knocking out David Avanesyan in the final minute of the sixth round last December 10 in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska. * * * The fight headlined a BLK Prime Boxing PPV. After the fight, Crawford revealed it was a one fight deal and he is still a free agent. After his win against Shawn Porter, Crawford announced his split with promoter Bob Arum and departure from Top Rank, choosing instead to test free agency. He also launched a breach of contract lawsuit against Top Rank. * * * De La Hoya is seriously luring the services of the world pound-for-pound contender. Golden Boy is considering Alexis Rocha (22-1, 14 KOs), age 25, a southpaw from Santa Ana, California who just grabbed his sixth straight victory with a seventh-round knockout of George Ashie. * * * Rocha is the No. 3 contender to Crawford’s WBO welterweight title. Another Golden Boy boxer Vergil Ortiz Jr. (19-0, 19 KOs) and former unified welterweight champ Keith Thurman (30-1, 22KOs) are both busy with their respective fights. Rocha is the only available among high positioned contenders to challenge for his first major title fight. * * * The controversy from the Los Angeles Lakers' overtime loss to the Boston Celtics on Saturday continued with a statement released by the National Basketball Referees Association on its official Twitter account. * * * "Like everyone else, referees make mistakes," the union tweeted. "We made one at the end of last night's game and that is gut-wrenching for us. This play will weigh heavily and cause sleepless nights as we strive to be the best referees we can be." * * * After the Lakers' 125-121 OT loss to the Celtics, the crew chief for the game Eric Lewis, said the referees should have called on Jayson Tatum a shooting foul on LeBron James' last-second layup attempt. James would have attempted at the free throw line and could have won the game with the score tied 105-105. * * * "We got cheated tonight, honestly. ... It's unacceptable," Lakers forward Anthony Davis was quoted by reporters after the game. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Maloney L. Samaco. |
