St. John Paul is title favorite By Lito delos Reyes PhilBoxing.com Sun, 02 Oct 2022 THE Saint John Paul II Patriots of Davao City is now a title favorite in the coming ALDU Cup of the Davao del Norte Basketball League (DDNBL) on October 8 in Tagum. The SJP Patriots defeated the Cor Jesu College of Digos City, 100-86 in their championship game of the 1st Sarante Cup Inter-Collegiate basketball tournament last September 25 in Magsaysay, Davao del Sur. The Patriots came back so strong after losing to Cor Jesu, 86-97 in the elimination round. The Patriots was led by six-footer Jesson Duco with 15 points followed by Patrick Salvo with 13. John Lloyd Kinatagcan added 12 and with Kim Mundiz and Jericho Sauci both had 10 points. The other Patriots are Audy Casayas, 5’10; Vincent Baban; 5’10; Gian Yaco, 5’10; John Sanchez, 6’3; and Froilan Palcis, 5’10. "I told my players not to waste or squander the opportunity or chance given to us to reach the championship,” said SJP Patriots coach Howard Delgado. It was the first invitational league won by the Patriots since the pandemic. The Patriots received P50,000 while the Red Lions earned P30,000. The Agro-Industrial Foundation Colleges Sailors took third place to P20,000 while the Philippine Women's College Patriots finished fourth to get P10,000. Trophies were also awarded. The SJP Patriots are now considered a title-favorite because of winning the Sarante Cup. SJP is in Bracketed B of the ALDU Cup with MATS Navigators, Davao Merchant Marine Academy, Brokenshire College and University of Mindanao Tagum. Bracket A are Jose Maria College, PWC, Davao del Norte State College, UM Davao and UM Samal. DDNBL Commissioner and SanMan Sports Foundation Chairman Arman Sañano said the games will also be played in Panabo, Samal and Davao City.
