NBA Daily: 2022-2023 Season Preview #12 – New York Knicks

For every team, we will examine bit-by-bit the important aspects that may shape its progress and provide a rough projection of how it will fare vis-à-vis its previous year’s performance and versus the rest of the league.

Headliners:

The New York Knicks fans didn’t get the summer splash that they wanted when the Utah Jazz opted to trade All Star guard Donovan Mitchell elsewhere. They can however find comfort in the acquisition of Jalen Brunson, who signed a four-year $105-million free agent deal with the Knicks last July.

Julius Randle and RJ Barrett, the two guys that led the Knicks to the playoffs in the 2020-2021 NBA season, its lone postseason appearance in the past nine years, are back with the team for another tour of duty. Though RJ Barrett continued to improve on his year-on-year performance, averaging career bests of 20.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per contest, Julius Randle couldn’t duplicate his All Star performance in the season prior.

Though Randle’s production of 20.1 markers, 9.9 boards, and 5.1 dimes on a nightly basis may look good on paper, his actual performance didn’t translate to wins. He shot a career-low 41.1% shooting from the field (excluding his rookie season where he only shot 1-for-3), and connected 40 less three pointers while shooting about the same number of attempts the previous year, for an abysmal 30.8% shooting from deep – down from an impressive 41.1% accuracy in 2020-2021.

Jalen Brunson will try to address the Knicks’ shooting and scoring woes. He averaged 16.3 points per game last regular season and was even better in the playoffs, scoring 21.6 markers for Dallas on a nightly basis. However, it isn’t likely that he’ll get the Knicks over the hump just yet. There are at least 8 other teams in the East that have improved either in roster composition or in chemistry or both.

Their own first round pick for next season’s highly anticipated Rookie Draft will come in handy as the season unfolds. They’d be better served if they choose to wait it out, noting that they have other draft assets and perhaps serviceable players as well to package in exchange for a better draft position or star player to improve their chances in the future. At this point in time, though, the relatively impatient Knicks fans will have to patiently wait.
