SOUTHPAW Joey Canoy of General Santos City will challenge reigning World Boxing Organization Oriental minimumweight champion ArAr “Asero” Andales of Northern Samar on March 27 at Rizal.
“As of now, I’m still 112 pounds,” said the 28-year-old Canoy (17-5-1, 9KOs).
Canoy now spars with former World Boxing Organisation Oriental Youth flyweight champion Jayson “Smasher” Mama (16-1-0, 9KOs), Jerven “Iron Fist” Mama (12-1-1, 7KOs) and Vince “J-Vince” Paras (16-2-0, 14KOs), all from General Santos City.
According to Canoy, Andales (13-2-0, 5KOs) is a very good fighter.
“I only have to focus on the game and use my brain,” said Canoy.
Canoy, who is being handled by trainer Markquil “Gunz” Salvana, had two bouts last year.
He first suffered a unanimous decision loss to Nhlanha Tyirha of South Africa last May 21, 2021 at International Convention Centre in East London.
Canoy was disappointed upon learning that it was not a championship fight in South Africa.
“We have arrived already and we have no choice but to fight,” said Canoy.
He then won by a unanimous decision over Michael Camelion last October 29 at the Sanman Gym in General Santos City.
The promoter is Gerry Balmes of Quibors Boxing Promotion while the matchmaker is Art Monis.
