LGU, MILF Join Forces to Secure Artifact Site

PhilBoxing.com

MAITUM, Sarangani (April 10, Special to PhilBoxing.com) - In a rush to prevent a repeat of desecration and looting of Pinol cave over ten years ago, Maitum mayor Elsie Perrett on Wednesday sought the cooperation of the local command of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to help secure a new ancient artifact site accidentally discovered Saturday by a bulldozer operator.

Perrett met with MILF commander Kingboy Bayang and his aides to coordinate efforts to secure a hillside, also in Barangay Pinol, where earthen jars and skeletal remains were found inside what appeared to be a cave less than a kilometer from where the famous Maitum jars where found in 1991.

Both Perett and Kumander Kingboy appealed to residents in the area not to enter the cave in order to preserve whatever artifacts there might still be inside.

Kingboy is the chairman of the Biwang Provincial Committee of the MILF.

Kingboy, who emphasized that he is representing the local joint committee on ceasefire and cessation of hostilities (CCCH) between the MILF and the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP), said a number of MILF regulars will be deployed in the area along with some members of the Moro National Liberation Front.

He said the MILF regulars will coordinate with the local police that will likewise be deployed by the local government of Maitum.

Barangay Pinol is predominantly populated by Muslim Maguindanaowons and is believed to be also a rebel stronghold.
A ceasefire agreement between the Philippine government and the MILF is still in effect.

Perett said artifacts that will be recovered from the site are priceless and must be preserved at all cost.

"Experts from the National Museum will be coming over to examine the relics found inside the cave," she said.
Sarangani governor Miguel Rene Dominguez earlier asked Perrett to secure the area to prevent looters from taking away any items from the site.

He said he might request the presence of government soldiers to help secure the new find.
