Since moving to welterweight, the 34-year-old Omaha, Nebraska native has claimed the WBO title and made four successful defenses, beating Jose Benavidez by 12th round, Amir Khan by 6th round TKO 6, Egidijus Kavaliauskas by 9th round TKO 9 and Kell Brook by 4th round TKO 4.

He has held multiple world championships in three weight classes, including the WBO welterweight title since 2018. He held the WBO, The Ring lightweight title from 2014 to 2015 and the unified WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, Ring light welterweight titles from 2015 to 2017.

He also held the WBO lightweight title, The Ring lightweight title and the WBO–NABO lightweight title.

Porter, who is rated No. 4 by The Ring, is a two-time welterweight champion. The 34-year-old Las Vegas resident outpointed Devon Alexander to claim the IBF title by unanimous decision on December 7, 2013 at the Barclays Center, New York City, U.S.

He defended it against Paulie Malignaggi by 4th round TKO on April 19, 2014 at the D.C. Armory, Washington, D.C., U.S. He lost it one year after winning it to Kell Brook on August 16, 2014 at the StubHub Center, Carson, California, U.S. by majority decision.

"Showtime” redeemed himself and outpointed Danny Garcia by unanimous decision to seize the vacant WBC title in August 2018. He made one successful defense against Yordenis Ugas by split decision before losing a unification match to Errol Spence Jr. by split decision.

On July 31, 2021, the WBO ordered Terence Crawford to defend his welterweight title against the No. 2 ranked WBO welterweight contender Shawn Porter. The former two-time welterweight champion was seen as the biggest challenge in Crawford's career up to that point.

* * *

As the two sides were unable to negotiate the terms of the fight, the WBO set a purse bid for September 2, 2021, which was later postponed until September 14. Crawford and Porter would adhere to a 60-40 purse split, rather than the usual 80-20 split for mandated matches, taking into account the earnings from their three previous fights.

* * *

The event will be promoted by Crawford's promoter Top Rank with Porter's promoter Premier Boxing Champions. In accordance to the signed 60-40 split, Crawford is guaranteed more than $6 million, while Porter is guaranteed at least $4 million.

* * *

It took four years since Crawford became the first undisputed champion in the light welterweight division of the four-belt before moving up to welterweight, to finally fight an elite foe who is still very much in his prime for him to display his impressive boxing skills.

* * *

Porter is a two-time former welterweight world champion, being the IBF titlist from 2013 to 2014 and the WBC champion from 2018 to 2019.

* * *

He also held the WBO-NABO interim junior middleweight title, WBC-NABF welterweight title, WBO–NABO welterweight title, the IBF North American welterweight title, and the WBC Silver welterweight title.

Porter also lost to Keith Thurman by unanimous decision on June 25, 2016 at the Barclays Center, New York City, New York, U.S.
