SPORTS SHORTS 212: MANNY PACQUIAO'S PAY-PER-VIEW RECORDS

PhilBoxing.com

According to Kevin Iole, the WBA Super world welterweight championship between Manny Pacquiao and Yordenis Ugas was witnessed by 17,438 fans at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and it sold only 250,000 PPV buys.

* * *

It was only bigger than Pacquiao’s PPV sales in his fights against Oscar Larios, Jorge Solis, and David Diaz, per Wikipedia. But it was way below the 4.6 million PPVs and $400 million sales for the Fight of the Century with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

* * *

It was Pacquiao’s first bout coming from a two-year or layoff 25-month layoff and Ugas came as a late substitution for WBC and IBF titlist Errol Spence Jr.

* * *

If it were against Spence, with his legion of American fans, the fight was expected to earn a million buys. Like what Pacquiao's fights did with Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito, Shane Mosley, and Juan Manuel Marquez.

* * *

The following Pacquiao fights were broadcast on pay-per-view television. These figures were PPV sales in the United States per Wikipedia.

* * *

Morales vs. Pacquiao 350,000 $15,700,000
Morales vs. Pacquiao II 360,000 $16,200,000

Pacquiao vs. Solís 150,000 $5,992,000
Pacquiao vs. Barrera II 350,000 $17,532,000

Pacquiao vs. Bradley II 800,000 $49,000,000
Pacquiao vs. Algieri 400,000 $24,000,000
Mayweather Jr. vs. Pacquiao 4,600,000 $400,000,000

Pacquiao vs. Thurman 500,000 $37,500,000
Pacquiao vs. Ugás 250,000 $18,750,000

* * *

Pacquiao's total sales is 20,401,000 PPVs for a total amount of $1,294,661,000 in 26 fights.

* * *

In comparison to Floyd Mayweather Jr., the undefeated five division champion garnered a total sales of 24,959,000 PPVs for a total amount of $1,717,940,000 in 17 fights, including latest exhibition bout with YouTuber Logan Paul on June 6, 2021 in Miami Gardens, Florida which sold 1 million PPVs.

* * *

On the reported rift between coach Freddie Roach and conditioning coach Justin Fortune, Pacquiao was quoted by Rappler: "I do not feel the tension between them. The whole team even talked after the fight. There is no problem."

* * *

Pacquiao accepted full responsibility to his loss Ugas. "I take the blame for everything. Maybe because I am so passionate that I overtrained. I will accept it all. That is boxing."

* * *

Senator Manny Pacquiao announced that he was not interested to run for vice president in the 2022 presidential elections because he wants to be "active" in government. This is to accomplish his goals for the country.

* * *

"You know, if I am only after a position, I can run for senator, vice president but I want a position that can help me effect change. I want to be active, I want to be able to do something and not just sit there and do nothing," Pacquiao said in a Rappler Talk interview.

* * *

The PDP-Laban wing led by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi said they are no longer including Sen. Manny Pacquiao in its Senate lineup for the 2022 elections.

* * *

The Cusi faction earlier said they had offered to include Pacquiao in their Senate slate after he was ousted as party president, following a word war with President Rodrigo Duterte. Pacquiao's wing ousted Duterte from his position as party chairman.
