NBA Daily: Shorthanded Spurs Snap Knicks 3-Game Win Streak 119-93

PhilBoxing.com

Boracay Island, Philippines – The San Antonio Spurs were without key players Derrick White, Devin Vassell, and Rudy Gay due to health and safety protocols for COVID-19, as was LaMarcus Aldridge who sat out due to an illness. It did not stop them, however, as Gregg Popovich’s wards still comfortably beat the New York Knicks 119-93 on Tuesday night (Wednesday morning, Philippine time) at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

The Spurs had ten players scoring at least 8 points, including six with double figures. Versatile big man Trey Lyles was the unlikely hero, with season-high 18 markers on a 7-for-13 field goal shooting, including 4-for-6 from the rainbow territory. He also had 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.

Dejounte Murray added 17 points, 6 boards, 6 dimes, and 3 steals for San Antonio, who improved to an 18-13 mark. The Spurs have won 7 of their last 10 games and are now 5th on the Western Conference teams standings.

All Star forward and Knicks leading scorer Julius Randlle was held to just 14 points on a dismal 6-for-16 field goal shooting, largely due to outstanding defensive performance from Spurs’ 21-year-old sophomore forward Luka Samanic, who also contributed 14 markers, including 3 from rainbow territory, off-the-bench.

Reserve guard Immanuel Quickley topscored for New York with 25, but the Knicks found no answer to San Antonio’s clinical and balanced attack, highlighted by 31 team assists, while only committing 8 turnovers throughout the contest.

The Knicks, who were also without Derrick Rose due to health and safety protocols and Taj Gibson due to a sprained left ankle, dropped to 18 wins against 18 losses.

Up next for the Spurs are the Oklahoma City Thunder in San Antonio on Thursday night (Friday morning, Philippine time).

Meanwhile, the Knick will travel home to face the Detroit Pistons on the same night.

How They Scored:

Spurs 119 – Lyles 18, Murray 17, Samanic 14, Mills 14, Walker IV 11, DeRozan 10, Johnson 9, Poeltl 8, Eubanks 8, Bates-Diop 8, Jones 2

Knicks 93 – Quickley 26, Barrett 15, Randle 14, Ntilikina 13, Toppin 7, Knox II 7, Noel 4, Burks 4, Bullock 3
