Women's Baseball: Philippines earns no lower than fourth in BFA ranking and Top 10 in world

The Philippine women’s baseball team needs one final push in its bid for a modest finish in the Baseball Federation of Asia Women’s Cup held at the Panda Stadium in Guangdong, China.
The Filipinas, who already had secured its place in the top four of this eight-team series that also serves as qualifier for the 2020 World Cup, were trying to improve on their standing further to third in China to achieve the purpose.
Playing for the first time in an Asian level play, the Filipinas would have completed their well-earned reputation as surprised giant-killers if they could repeat their 6-2 triumph over the Chinese on Wednesday in the Round of Four.
The Philippines lost to Japan, 0-17, but only after repulsing the Mainlanders to ensure they won’t be ending up lower than fourth place.
Coach Egay delos Reyes’ Girls finished as the second best team in Group B of the elimination round with a 2-1 win-loss card next only top team Chinese Taipei (3-0).
The Japanese emerged at the top of the standing in Group A (3-0) followed by China (2-1), India (2-1 and Pakistan (03).
Following the Philippines in Group B standing in the elimination were South Korea (1-2) and Hong Kong (03).
The Philippines walloped Hong Kong, ranked 10th in the world, 12-3, and the Koreans, 6th in the world, 14-7, in the elimination as it stands to earn a slot in next year’s Women’s World Cup should 2018 ranking rules are to be followed.
Asia was given four seats in the 2018 World Cup, which the Philippine Amateur Baseball Association secretary general Jose “Pepe” Munoz hopes will still apply this year.
“Women’s baseball in Asia is still in its infant years reason why the region has been allotted four representation in the World Cup in 2018,” Munoz told this writer in a telephone interview on Thursday.
“Wala pa namang lumalabas na new ruling, so we presume that the rules on representation still apply this year,” Munoz said.
That twin victories over the Hongkongites and the Koreans could, too, assure the Philippines of world ranking within the vicinity of from sixth to 10th.
