PhilBoxing.com

International Master (IM) Ricardo ?Ricky? de Guzman continued his winning ways in the local shore as he emerged over-all champion in the 7th leg of National Executive Chess Championships dubbed as Grandmaster Rosendo Balinas Jr. chess cup held at the Activity Hall, Alphaland Makati Place, Ayala Avenue in Makati City late Saturday.

The Antipolo City, Rizal pride IM De Guzman, best remembered for winning the 1981 Asian Junior Chess Championships in Dhaka, Bangladesh where he was awarded an outright IM title, had a better tie break over International Master (IM) Petronio Roca of Dasmarinas City, Cavite en route to the coveted Open Chess title. De Guzman and Roca both tallied 5.0 points in six outings in the one-day rapid event backed up by Engineer Antonio "Tony" Carreon Balinas in close cooperation with Alphaland Corporation and organized by the Philippine Executive Chess Association (PECA) under the leadership of it's president Dr. Jenny Mayor and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).

?Again I would like to dedicate my victory to my family, relatives and friends," said De Guzman who is fresh from winning the Open Kitchen Chess Tournament held at the Open Kitchen P. Tuazon Boulevard, Barangay Kaunlaran in Cubao, Quezon City last June 18, an event hosted by New York Chess League top honcho/boss Nonoy Rafael in close cooperation with China Aurelio, John Gomez and Popo Martinez of Open Kitchen and Jeff Dimalanta.

It shall be recalled that De Guzman emerged as the country?s best performer in the Open section of the 17th Asian Continental Chess Championships last December at the Tiara Hotel in Makati City.

In the sixth and final round at the Grandmaster Rosendo Balinas Jr. chess cup, playing white, De Guzman defeated National Master (NM) Efren Bagamasbad after 45 moves of Trompovsky Opening.

Roca, an engineer by profession playing under the banner of Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Chief Bgen. Charito "Ching" Plaza, Deputy Director General Theo Panga and Dasmari?as City mayor Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr., playing black, trounced Maynilad Water Services Inc. top player Dandel Fernandez after 40 moves of Birds Opening.

8-times Illinois USA Champion International Master (IM) Angelo Young, on the other hand, edged 7-times Philippine Executive Grandprix Champion Dr. Jenny Mayor after 35 moves of Slav defense employing the black pieces.

IM Young, the country's representative in this year's World Seniors Chess Championship to be held on November 11 to 24 in Bucharest, Romania, placed solo third with 4.0 points.

Rounding up to the top 15-circle are Fernandez, NM Bagamasbad, Lloyd Lanciola, Benjamin Dy, National Master (NM) Robert Arellano, Dr. Jenny Mayor, engineer Arjoe Loanzon, Agripino Camposano, lawyer Melzar Galicia, engineer Ravel Canlas, Joseph Navarro and Professor Rey Reyes.-Marlon Bernardino-
