PEÑALOSA AND CARDENAS MAKE WEIGHT FOR WBO ORIENTAL TITLE CLASH By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Fri, 15 Feb 2019 L-R: Cardenas, Promoter Gerry Penalosa and Dave Penalosa. MANDALUYONG CITY, METRO MANILA - The official weigh-in turned out to be a struggle but the fight is on. In what would be a rare predicament, both Filipino Dave Pe?alosa (14-0,10KO?s) and Mexican Marcos Cardenas (19-6-1,15KO?s) came in above the featherweight limit in their first attempt on the scales. Cardenas had to shed a pound and Pe?alosa had to lose two. Cardenas made weight first. The Filipino cornermen and the promoter, former two-division champion Gerry Pe?alosa, were relieved when Dave made 126 lbs less than an hour before the deadline. Aside from the WBO Oriental belt, the winner will be ranked among the contenders and in the future get a shot at the title. ?I will assess how my nephews perform this Saturday,? Promoter Gerry Pe?alosa told this writer after the weigh-in. ?They want to continue boxing. They insisted on it, they kept calling me last year they want to fight. I told them to be very serious in their training. If they give an impressive performance, I will continue to promote them, and let them fight for a world title.? ?It?s our fault,? Dave said during the post weigh-in press conference. ?We were too confident that I already made weight, Kumpiyansa lang.? Carlos Ceasar Penalosa and Watana Phenbaan. On the undercard, Carlo Caesar Pe?alosa (13-1,6KO?s) will be pitted against Thai Watana Phenbaan (18-5,11KO?s) in a non-title contest. Carlo weighed 113lbs while Phenbaan was at 114. Phenbaan lost by 4th round TKO in Qingdao, China to Wulan Tuolehazi in a WBO interim Asia Pacific flyweight title bout last year. Another prospect to watch, Carl Jammes Martin (11-0,10KO?s) will see action for the first time in a televised Metro Manila fight card. The Ifugao star has a fan-friendly all-action style and could wind up becoming a big name if he gets more fights on television. Martin is the number 10 bantamweight contender of the WBO and ranked number 14 by the WBA. Carl Jammes Martin and Petchorchae Kokietgym. His opponent Petchorchae Kokietgym (17-2,8KO?s) of Thailand, lost to Filipino Giemel Magramo by TKO in the third round last October in a WBO Oriental flyweight title bout. Martin stepped on the scales at 118lbs, Kokietgym at 116lbs. Former two-division champion John Riel Casimero (25-4, 16KO?s) will battle Japanese Kenya Yamashita (13-4,10KO?s) as a bantamweight. Casimero won world titles at 108 and 112 lbs. Both made 118 llbs. There will be three more undercard bouts - Jheritz Chavez vs Junar Adante, Jenel Lausa vs Roel Llino and John Mark Tihuk vs Ruben Traza. The fights will be held Saturday February 16 at the SM North Edsa Skydome in Quezon City and will be televised live in the Philippines on ESPN 5.
