MAGRAMO STOPS GE, XIANG DECKS YURONG

PhilBoxing.com

SUZHOU, CHINA ? Filipino boxers split their match-ups against their Chinese counterparts in compelling regional bouts Saturday night at the Suzhou Olympic Sports Center.

World ranked flyweights Ge Wenfeng of China and Giemel Magramo of the Philippines battled to unify their ranking titles. Ge, the WBO International titleholder, had a good start in a tight tactical contest. But Magramo, the WBO Oriental belt holder, used pressure and volume punching and inflicted welts on the Chinese boxer?s face.

As the fight progressed, a swelling developed on Ge?s right eye, more on the lower lid. Going into the 8th and 9th rounds, the ring doctor and referee Danrex Tapdasan were already checking in on Ge, paying close attention to his ability to see from that eye. He was allowed to continue but the swelling increased and in the 10th round, he was cut on the upper right eyelid as well.

With the right eye getting worse and the injuries ruled as coming from a legal punch, the fight was stopped at the end of the tenth round and Magramo winning by TKO.

He was also ahead on the three judges? cards at that point. Edward Ligas (Philippines) ? 96-94, Mark Leong (Macau)- 99-91 and Martino Redona (USA)- 98-92.

Going into this fight, Ge was ranked number 9 while Magramo was number 6 by the WBO.

In the fight for the vacant WBO Oriental Youth lightweight title, China?s Xiang Li delivered a stunning right to the jaw of Arvin Yurong of the Philippines, knocking him down near the end of round four.

He tried to get by grabbing the ropes but his legs were still rubbery prompting Thai referee Surat Soikrachang to correctly stop it at 2:59.

For the other bouts ? Jing Xiang of China showed excellent lateral movement and pinpoint punching to beat Thai Suriyan Satorn by a wide unanimous decision to retain the WBC Silevr flyweight title.

Last September, Xiang beat former WBO miniflyweight world champ Merlito Sabillo of the Philippines by unanimous decision.

Satorn, also known as Kompayak Propramook, is a former WBC world light flyweight champion.

Jian Wang of China vs Korean Sung Youg Yang was an entertaining split draw for the vacant WBO Oriental junior featherweight title.

The event was opened by the all female match of Ouyang Jianping vs Yun fan that was also a draw.

The bouts were sanctioned by the Professional Boxing Commission of China.
